1968 COPO Camaro

Post by Structo »

This is Tim Allen's '68 Camaro.

I always favored the '69 Z28 but this car is understated and very cool.
Check out the details as Jay Leno reviews then drives the car.

I love Tim's face when he does a burnout.

Very cool my buddy es dad has a yenko nova.its been in all the hotrod magazines .just to here it idol is an experience .
When I was a kid my friend dad was vette guy.Pretty much owened about every year at On time or another.I've rode in some nice big block vettes
I think the 70&1\2 lt1 camaro was one of the coolest cars I've ever rode in man that thing would run with the big blocks .it was rated a 350 HP at 5000 rpm more like 550 at 7000rpm

Yeah, I remember the Yenko's as well.

A friend had a stock green 1969 Z28 with the 302.
He did put wider rims on the back.

He would just stand on the gas and dump the clutch.
Nothing like a 8K RPM in the morning.

Probably why I like the '69 so much.

He actually got about four years out of the 302 before it blew.

And here I thought Tim was a Mustang guy.
I have a picture of him with my brother at a Mustang show.
That was the big show in Charlotte when Bill Clinton showed up with his '67 Mustang.

I wish I still had my cars a 1968 Camero 327/4 -speed and a 1969 Firebird 400/5-speed sold and guy burnt it up.

My 1968 GTX 440 is no longer together either.

I love those old GTX cars.

There was one in my town that ruled the gut for a while.

BTW, COPO stands for Central Office Production Order.

It was a way to get a big engine in cars like Camaro's.

GM management did not like to build anything that would compete with the Corvette.
So they (dealers) came up with the COPO system.

So if you knew somebody (Dealer) with connections, you could order a Camaro with a big block like the 427.

In 2012 they introduced the COPO Camaro again, but this time with management on board.

Marketing at it's best :D

Not hardly, the modern COPO Camaros haul ass. Straight off the dealer floor they are 3 secs faster in the quarter mile than any of 60's models ever were.

I don't pretend to know everything GM.
And, I didn't say the old COPO cars were any faster than anything else at the time.
Though it seems to be pretty logical that a 1969 Camaro with a 427 engine is going to pretty much rape any challengers during that time.
I was 18 years old in 1975, so I know what I saw.

The 340 Dodges did pretty good but nobody could stand
up to the Chevy Big Blocks.
Sure there were the suspension setups and tires, but as I recall, the big blocks ruled the gut in the mid to late 70's.

Another friend I had drove a 1970 Chevelle with a 454 crate motor.
He was another guy that was pretty much undefeated.
I remember him because in his pool room he had a picture blown
up to poster size with him hanging his left arm out the window while burning rubber for about two blocks.

I lived through the 60's and 70's and can only relate those experiences that I lived.

All my acquaintances were GM enthusiasts including me.
Back then it was pretty much GM verses Mopar.

I had a 1965 Chevelle Super Sport, so I can relate directly to those cars in that time frame.

My old '69 Chevy took me the fastest I ever drove in a car. Early on a Sunday morning. Brand new stretch of divided highway, and no one on it but me for 12 miles.
