New Build - Mini-Marshall AFD / Hot Rod SE

Post by mhartman »

Just finished wiring this one up after far too many delays. This is my take on bedroom player's hot-rodded Marshall. It is a Parallel SE power section with power scaling put together with a extra-gain stage Marshall-style preamp. Kind of a cross between a mini-plex (borrowed a lot from this design in the power section setup) and an SIR 36 AFD, with some additional options baked in. I borrowed a lot from the AFD build that I did a while back (as tweaked after reading too many pages over at Metroamp), but also added switchable tonestack, peaker, V2 in-out, and V1A cathode setup (for hi/low gain).

Fired right up first time. After tweaking the voltages, it is starting to sound really cool. I used Edcor transformers and went way overboard on the OT (it didn't look that big when I ordered it). Also, I used all NOS resistors and caps throughout the preamp for some mojo. As I built it for me, I didn't mind going all out on the parts.

After I get done tweaking, I need to work on cosmetics.

Metal candy!! It looks wonderful in every way. What are you going to house it in? Natural aluminum would look fantastic!!!

and be nearly impossible!

Thank man. I was thinking white tolex with gold face/knobs, but that may be too 70s for my taste. Maybe I just slap the aluminum cover and feet on the bottom and leave it bare?

Caged in heavy screen would be awesome!

I wonder how I would pull that off?

Maybe hardwood? Driftwood?

Thanks for all of the comments guys. Instead of a cage, I decided to go white on white. I went with a Mojo extra small Marshall style cab and did the faceplate/nameplate through BNP Lasers. EDIT - the forum preview makes it look kind of rough - -full size looks right though.

Man, you will require a tux with tails to play that head. Nice!

Thanks man. I was looking for something a bit different with this one. I was inspired by a Hiwatt custom head that I saw a while back.
