Looking at a Whitney JTM45 but the Guts Look Different

Post by cap217 »

I am looking at a used Whitney JTM45 on TGP. The gut shot doesnt look much like a standard JTM45. I am wondering what the build is supposed to be. Maybe a different version of a KT66 Marshal-esq sound? Whitney seems to know what he is doing but hasnt sold many amps and there isnt much out there.

Curious because I have been looking to buy a handwired marshall head for a lonely 4x12 cab I have.

JTM Sortof5

Pretty normal circuit with (very oddly) .68u bypass over V2a. Otherwise about the same other than the layout.

Funny thing...

I talked to the builder and he is a smart and knowledgeable guy. He went through the picture with me and said that he did not do some of the wiring on there. He said he didnt use the wire and there was no shrink wrap on it. He also said that there are some minor changes as well but nothing major.

I talked to the seller and he got an ATTITUDE with me saying that the amp is all stock and not messed with.

So now I am stuck between dealing with him or just passing. Its a shame though. I think the seller should update his listing to state that the amp may have been listed. But what do I know about being honest?

There is a wonderful 1968 style 50w Metro parts amp with all the right stuff in it for $850 on the Metro classifieds. That is around a $400 parts only discount. A deal.

JTM45 never had a bypass on the second stage. Always shared 820R/250u first stages, 270k mixers, 470p mix bypass.

I'd pass. If a seller pulls an attitude when you ask good honest questions, let him find someone less informed and more desperate.

The one Miles referred to looks really good and is laid out more conventionally, so maybe you will get what (or close to) you are expecting from the amp.
