EL34, 6L6 and powerrating?

Post by Franc »

Hi guys, new here and just finished an Express clone.

I have EH EL34s in there and I know it also takes 6L6s.
But I was wondering which tube is the original tube for an Express?
Which one gives it its destintive Trainwreck sound>

And also, what the official powerrating of the amp with both types?

Thanks,

Hey Franc!

EL34s or 6V6s... (they also use the same biasvoltage range).
Pout with EL34s: about 30 Watts, about 20 Watts with 6V6s.
P a max EL34s: 25 Watts
P a max 6V6s: 12 Watts, JJ 6V6s: 14 Watts

Hope this helps, there's lot of Trainwreck info over here and on the www.

Thanks,

My mistake, I thought it was 6L6 :)

6L6 should also be possible shouldn't it? Maybe with a little adjustment to the biascircuit (or not even that?).

One modern readily available tube that works well in an Express is the new Groove Tube EL34M. Those are the tubes that were in my original Express in my Youtube clip> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2_12Ler9B8

Going by voltage readings at the output, I have gotten seemingly quite a bit more power out of EL34s. Somewhere around 40 watts going by Tino Zottola's chart. I know on the amps I have built, the EL34s are putting out WAY more power than 6V6s, the difference is DRAMATIC. If this helps...
