Well I figured I would be doing the playing and them watching to see if I could perform a perfect G, D, & C chord before I made a lead run. :) not be asked so do you know any songs. Then have to listen to him tune up for an hour and stumble around. No he was not drunk but probably on good prescription drugs perhaps.

He looked kind of like Roy Orbison early days with bowl haircut but I only wished he could sing and play like Roy did.

This is gold!

I had an audition like that once. Had to lug my old 2x12 combo up a set of rickety wooden stairs to an apartment...the drummer's apartment at that! Queue the drummer jokes...

If you had paid for the pizza, he'd have left his own apartment.

Last time I did this was unexpectedly fun. Friend recommended me, so I wasn't too worried about getting roofied and losing a kidney. Friend described them as a "porch" band with violin and acoustic guitar. So can you blame me for not bringing my earplugs? Turns out they were porch PUNK, like Camper Van Beethoven. Damn they were loud! All songs with three cowboy chords, dirt simple, but I had a pretty good time. They had a great barroom energy.

Auditions are my least favorite. We had an up and coming band and our singer got married and bailed. Endless tryouts and nothing but weirdos and flakes. Became an instrumental band that didn't last much longer but it was fun.

My next band had a killer singer (Eric Lindell) but he was pretty wild back then and our drummer was way too loud for a good singer, so more try outs. I think that's why I like watching the singing shows with my daughter because I know how hard a good singer is to find.

Ended up moving back to my home town and playing with guys I knew 20 years ago because the whole craigslist thing is too crazy.

If that drummer had an apartment, it must have been built over his mom's house.

:o

Auditions for me are a love/hate thing for sure. I regularly check Craigslist but seldom respond. I DO however respond to some (if you read between the lines, sometimes there are some clues as to what type of experience you're in for...) just to go test myself and meet people, network, and as Mark said...even when the group overall isn't that great, sometimes you meet some real good individual players that you may want to poach later!

Not really an audition story, but a friend called me and asked me to sub for their guitar player. He and I played in really good blues funk rock band together in the past so no audition. It's a 4 piece horn section, keys, bass, drums, singer, and guitar. All the makings for alot of fun. Interesting playing with guys you have never played with before. Did the gig with no rehearsals without a hitch, I did my homework. But it's a dance/bar band...I had a hard time when it came time for Sweet Caroline and Tainted Love and some others. It was truly embarassing. I wanted to kick my own ass. Just my problem, but I felt like I set a new low for myself. It's hard to find a group to be proud of. I hope he doesn't call me again...at least for that gig.

playing out

Post by ampmike »

A local blues band had there guitar player flake out. They had to push his bedroom AC unit in to get him out of bed for a gig,He had anxiety problems when playing,Needless to say I had to learn avbout 20 songs in ten days and we played in Scranton Pa.Its was great had a good time and even got paid. They brought another guitar player a real showoff. He wanted to have a lick battle, who is the fastest gun that night. The guy was a jackass. That was my last play in a club but it was fun. There are definitly all kinds of people in the music scene.Im ready to do it again soon.Been playing Sundays at church for a long time now.I hate when they want to bypass my amp into the system. You always get that terrible saying "Can you turn it down a bit"I just dial my guitar back a little.Mikey :D

hehehehe

I used to play at our church and of course they hate amps on stage.

I always had a volume pedal and would set it about 3/4 of the way up when we did sound check.

I mainly used it to play leads or swells, since the board guy was usually asleep at the wheel.

Also great for alter call to dial it down while retaining good tone.

I haven't found a church yet that isn't full of Hippocrates!

Simple just open your heart and home to Jesus and your church is your home or jam room or garage, or ............ :)
