Stupid on/off and standby switch question?

If I look at this layout the switches are off in the down position and on in the up position.

This seems to go against convention.

What is the correct orientation?

Yes down is off and flip the switch up for ON, or at least that's the way I saw it too....most amps up for on.

The uncertainty may be due to the different switch conventions used in North America and here in Australia ( where Mark and I reside ). Here, a toggle or rocker switch is ON in the DOWN position, whilst in North America UP is ON.

It can take several days for us antipodeans to adjust to the upside down light switches in North American buildings.

Yep, USA up is on down off. Marshall amps down is on up is off. and most any other amps across the pond.. And many times the layouts are reversed. inputs on the left . other amps inputs on the right side. Wonder if this applies to the way the drain swirl direction goes..

People in most countries feel Americans are stupid, so they find a better way to do EVERYTHING, even if it's not. Switches, schematics, decimal points, the numbers one and seven, z and zed, paper size, etc...

I once had someone complain that the switch positions in a dual switched kitchen light kept changing. In this case, it didn't matter whether she was American or not.

Oh, how about orienting the switch sideways? Left is off and right is on.

That's how I remember where to plug into most effects boxes...plug right in. I was dissapointed when I realized that it doesn't always work. I'll try counting to ten, if you don't mind.

This is fascinating. I didn't realize that Britain/Australia were different. I lived in Australia for most of a year, but since the switch types always looked different, I just thought it was due to being a different style (or that I was around poorly wired things). Anyways, I don't remember now and I can be rather oblivious.

I knew Marshalls were upside-down, but I always thought that was tradition and leaving things exactly as a Bassman plopped into head format. I didn't realize other Brit amps were the same and for other reasons.

You just have to remember they are" down under, so their switches are upside down... "

Thanks for the replies, I thought Ken Fischer would have followed the Marshall convention of down is on. After years of seeing and using amps with this orientation it seems very natural.

Perhaps I should fix this obvious oversight.
