Score!

Post by Reeltarded »

Someone just called me with an affordable '53 goldtop that I don't want or need but it's perfect for me. It's totally oversprayed with 40 year old black goldtop protectant..

I mean rattle can black. Oops!

I need to stop by KFC for a spork on the way to look tomorrow.

mmmmFFFFF!!! You'll need some ZipStrip Lite for that. Good luck!

Who would have the bad taste & lack of brain cell to spray up a gold top??? Ohhh... musicians. Feh! What was on their tiny little mind? Gotta make it look like Jimmy's Page.

Early wrap!

Leoz, imagine it's 1970 and time for a little introspection. No more bawdy blues, or reds, or golds. Let's just get simple.. psssssssst... it's pretty common I think. I am glad hippy joe and the monkey didn't strip it to mother earth mahogany. ;)

This makes maybe 25 guitars I have known to suffer from rattle can protectant devaluation. I love people! I am a people person!! Now to actually see the thing.

Seen it done with tweed, white & brown Fender amps, in an effort to look "modern" in the mid-late 60's. Not so much with guitars but then again, I'm lookin' at a lot more amps than guitars. Hey, if the price is right, an early LP is a wonderful thing no matter what color. Just put on your blinders and rock on with Rhubarb Red's fabulous invention.

A guy I used to associate with had a D'Angelico come in the store. He wants it (of course), but he wants it cheap. So he says "well the finish is kind of beat, so I can only offer you $xxx." The guy takes it home and varnishes it. Paint brush. Out of a can.

Some people are not too bright. We've all seen Fender Tweeds painted black to look more modern.

The things you see when you're out without your gun...!

Kidding of course, Homeland Security...

Oh yeah that's fun.

I hear stories about this guy in Alabama who had passed away and left around 100 guitars with his wife. He did have about 90 so I went to try to buy some stuff.

He had a million dollar collection. It was slightly devalued because he had a hobby where he liked to sand off sunburst with 180g and refinish everything natural with paddle varnish. There were Gibsons with the headstock overlay sanded through the inlays. Missing binding channels. It was harsh.

There was a guy here named Bill Godfrey. He butchered several super 4s and the only Stromberg that ever lived here. I don't let other people work on my guitars, ever. lol

Congrats on the score! Look forward to the pics. Never been a Les Paul guy unless they are light and have single coils. I've been lusting for a P90 Lester ever since my bandmate let me borrow this for a month. I'm ruined...........

I've only seen a couple examples where somebody was able to remove an overspray finish and leave the original finish alone.

I don't think any chemical is going to work without it destroying the under coat.

Sandpaper is the only way and it is usually a comprimise.

Can't wait to see the pics, Miles.

C'mon Miles. We want to see a picture of just how bad this is. We don't have anything better to do. It IS what we do -- look at pictures and then make mockery. Share!

Re: what Tom says about stripping it...you probably know this better than most, but I'll say it anyway. If the yo-yo who did it sprayed it without any prep work (right onto the shiny) you may be able to remove it. If not, a guy with your skills can restore it to it's proper glory and there is certainly no shame in removing the original finish in a situation like this.

Tom, I have been successful with this many many times. You use a plastic utensil. The harder plastic knife out of a togo box from Waffle House or the KFC spork.

It it's enamel over lacquer the enamel never stuck anyhow. It pops off like hard wax.

Ya know, Scarface was totally oversprayed in cherry when I found it. The scar was why it was oversprayed in cherry. Someone tried to remove the name Albert from the forearm area with nail polish remover or similar.
