My New Clone - check er out

Post by aaronz28 »

thought you guys/gals might enjoy critiquing this bad boy - cabs by Larry - Allyn's chassis/board, some goodies from RJ and the rest I sourced - including NOS A3801 and Clarostat Pots (Thanks Glen)

waiting on my 77dx mic to be returned from Wes Dooley so I can do a proper recording - but i'm veryvery pleased with the outcome.

Very nice, who did your cab and where did you get the Dyno labels from, I'm having issues on both fronts.

Very nice Aaron!! Since you own one of JM express amps...did you copy the layout, wire color and lead dress from that amp?

Sorry I had to ask that!!:)

hi, actually no, throughout the entire build process, i never cracked open the JM amp - I used other photos and known amps to copy.

i have sent photos to John though - he said the old bias layout and transformer etc brought back alot of great memories of when the first amps were being built. :D

as for color of the wire - the only available colors that you can get in the exact wire that Ken used is black/white - unless you want to order 1000's of feet - i am only planning to build a handfull of amps, so no need for miles of the stuff.

cheers

Dymo still makes a "3D" style label maker. Search for model 12966. It comes with enough black and red labels to make many sets of Trainwreck labels. I believe I picked mine up off Amazon for about $15.

I helped with the wire. A forum member swore me to keep a lid on what specific stuff that KF used. That said, I sourced a small amount for Aaron and pulled the identification labels before I sent it to him so the ID is still a mystery...
Not that it truly matters probably, but I didn't want to burn bridges with a fellow forum member.

The wire certainly won't make or break these amps. I have my money on valves and transformers. I find it a little odd that someone would want to keep the wire type a secret. I remember hearing Ken bought the wire based on availability and not sonic quality, still people love their mojo factor.

Great looking build... nice looking output transformer. I'm curious how it compares to the Pacific units??

There is a clip somewhere on You Tube where I thought Matt O'Ree demonstrated both output transformers.

I found this clip of the amp.
