Saw Knopfler on the last two tours - both Shangri-la and Roadrunning w/Emmylou.

Knopfler with a Les Paul through a Komet 60 is HEAVEN!

Check out the latest live album with Emmylou. A bit too sweet at times but when he takes a solo, just one note...BOOM! What a tone!

Here's a list of quintessential not super mainstream CDs in my collection with amazing guitar work:

A Love Supreme - Mahavishnu Orch. (and the orginal Coltrane versions are great)

Gov't Mule - Dose
Sunrise on the Sufferbus - Masters of Reality
Opeth - Ghost Reveries
Guitars and other cathedrals - Adrian Legg
Guit with it - Junior Brown

Anything by Joe Price!! If you like juke joint style roots blues. This guy is it!
Eardrums!!! We don't need no stinkin' eardrums!

As for Mark Knopfler, I never ever tire of:
On Every Street
Sailing to Philadelphia

...and I just love
Robben Ford - Supernatural

same with Eric Johnson - Venus Isle

for driving music the disc changer contains:
Jimmy Rogers All-Stars - Blues Blues Blues
Etta James - Life Love and the Blues
Joe Cocker - No Ordinary World
Bonnie Raitt - Longing In Their Hearts
SRV - Greatest Hits
ZZ - One Foot in the Blues

Other records that are too inspiring to live without include:
Mavis Staples
Dr John
Robert Randolph
Van Morrison

Still listen to The Filmore Concerts and Waiting for Columbus 30 some odd years after first hearing them too!

I'm definately gonna check out alot of your guys suggestions. As far as MK goes I always liked Dire Straights first record. I spent many hours as a teenager listening to it over and over to learn every lick on Sultans of Swing. Here's a short list of my fav rock albums that I listen to over and over again:

Joe Satriani - Crystal Planet
Allman Bros - Eat a Peach
Zappa - One Size Fits All
Dinosaur Jr. - Where you been
Aeorosmith - Get Your Wings
SRV - Texas Flood
UFO - Lights Out
Yes - The Yes Album

Also, I don't know what album it's from, but my wife has explicit instructions to play Green Grass and High Tides by the outlaws at my funeral.

Music is the best. F.Z.

As previous post- First LP - Dire Straits
NO question.
After the second LP (a close clone of first) his sound ceased to be unique. A great shame.
Personal favourite on that LP "In the Gallery" It is not even a blues but it contains more angst than many that bear the blues label, the solo speaks from the gut.

[Reminds me, I once had a restaurant gig, was turning the stereo down at reception, stood up and looked right into his eyes. Anyways... I spent next hour and half playing solo guitar in half empty restaurant in front of him and 2 band members- I hasten to add that they hadn't turned up for the music, just the food. But man, my playing just burned him all the same - just kiddin! - it was a classical gutar gig don't know if he was partial to Fernando Sor, Albeniz, Granados etc. ]

"So where were you when you first heard Dire Straits?"

Sky

You mentioned Gary Moore. I love that guy. I've heard him play a few different rigs and his sound is always super. There's a recent CD out called Blues for Greeny, and it's got some great guitar, along with some of the best "White-Boy -Blues" singing around.

And another thing- are you down with Keb Mo :?: Check out some of his stuff. He's got a great knack for putting a new twist on the Blues, especially old standards like "It Hurts Me Too". 8)
