5e3 in a 4x10 cabinet...

Post by ic-racer »

I have a 4x10 cabinet with a small cutout (too small for a bassman head). It looks like a 5e3 chassis will be a good fit, so I'm going to build a 5e3.

I got the chassis and transformers. This should go together pretty quickly.

Finished the amp today. Pictures to follow.
Initial impression is that 12AX7 in V2 is way too much gain. Don't have a decent 12AT7, so I have a 12AU7 in there now. Sounds pretty good. I suspect things may be different once I'm running through the 4 speaker cabinet. Seems like a lot of tweaking possibilities just in V2 alone.

I'm going to try and mount the chassis in the cabinet tonight and hook up the 4 speakers.

What have got in V1? It's hard to find good musical 12AT7s. Maybe find a NOS 5751.

The 12AY7 is great for V1.

My mistake, mixed up V1 and V1.

The input jack wiring was tedious. I used a star ground and wanted to connect the grounds of all the input jacks together. I also used a bus-bar, instead of the brass plate for the pot grounds.

Installed in 4x10 cabinet. I still need to hook up the speaker wires. Looks like I'll be doing series/parallel to get 8 ohms from four 8 ohm speakers. That should be fine with my 4 ohm OT.

Now that I am playing it through the 4x10 cabinet (rather than through my ported EV-S Dumble-style cabinet) it needs more bass, so back to 12AX7 in both V1 and V2.
