Backwards they are, tube rectifiers!
On paper they are different from a resistor- nonlinear. In the sound though, not so much. Usually with these mystery mojo things it's "I don't care if you can't measure it, sounds different."

Re: New JMP 50 style build in JTM45 chassis
Marstran's 1202-118 OT now has high and low taps for ~ 370VDC and 420VDC on the plates, unsure yet whether that's tube or SS, but it gives me options. Since apparently some JMP 50s came with tube rectos and others with SS, I won't be building something too unusual for someone else to want down the line.
Have to digest the good stuff offered here and review some other posts by you swamis, then draw up a layout/schemo changes.
Thanks, gents,
Greg

The transitional JTM 50 with a tube is a great freaking amp. Absolutely.
Oh, they are all really good though.

Ok. That's it.
Matt, will you marry me? I know a good thing when I see it.

I feel like a little ol' matchmaker.
You can step on rectifier tubes wrapped in a napkin when you give your vows. We happy spectators will throw 8 pin tube sockets as you trounce out the church door.
I'm planning the wedding right now.

Darn. Brian is out of the PTs, and hasn't yet responded about when they'll be in. Time to get the other bits, I suppose.

It can be a wait between batches sometimes.

OK I think peace has broken out on the tube rectifier debate.
You're all wrong though - tube rectifiers sound better - so there !
On transformers I don't sweat the power transformer too much.
The right voltage with more than enough current capability works regardless who manufactured it (as long as it's made in the USA)
The output transformer is critical.
This is where you get a lot of bang for your buck.
The difference between a good amp & a great amp IMHO.
There are some highly regarded OT's available.
Brian's are among them.

Thanks, Bob.
I let my mind wander to Merren, but understand they are quite pricey. As mentioned earlier, I have used Classic Tone, and of course Heyboer with good results in other builds. +1 on US only for me, but not sure of what others you may be referring to?
Miles, heard back from Brian that it might be a week or two for the PTs. No sweat to wait if I go with Marstran, as there are other parts to buy and I can start populating the chassis.
Cheers,
Greg

omg here we go with the tube again...
You'll be really happy with his transformers. Have you heard his amps? I keep wanting one but other stuff keeps getting in the way.

OK-anyone wanna trade me a zillion 1N4007's for a couple of my JJ GZ34's ?
Maybe 5V4's even.
The glass ones that sound like a tube mind you.

I have one Mullard in the box. I'd love to trade it for silicon or hookers.
