Help with 50 watt OT choice
I would first like to express my deep gratitude for this forum as a whole being the source of my latest purchase, OTS 50 watt 2x12 combo. It was told to me by the guy I traded a guitar to for this amp, that it was assembled at Ceriatone by Nik. I was installing a rear mounted OD trim pot and just checking things out today and notice that I have a Hammond 1750J 35 watt output tranny and it has only a 4 ohm tap, the speaker jacks are hardwired from OT. I would like to have this in a head box and be able to use diff cabs and speaker loads, so I need a selector switch (which is on order), My biggest confusion is that the ot is only a 35 watt, should it have come with heavier metal? I am going to order a new OT so I can switch ohms, but can someone tell me which OT to get? I have been searching the forum for 5 days now and, although I have read some VERY interesting and informative post, have not been able to find this info.
thanks,
jc

I used a Fender Prosonic OT in my 50W D clone...I really liked it a lot!

Well that's certainly not much to invest and try is it. Did you mount your in Ceriatone chassis or id you roll your own? If Ceriatone, did this OT match up on the mounting?

can't go wrong with anything from classictone.net / magnetic components
PT# 40-18001 (022871, 125A13A, 022855, 125A9A)
Output, 50W / 60W - 4/8/16 Ohm taps
used one of these for a 50 watter not too long ago, worked out great..
$68 and change, cant go wrong...
you might need to drill some mounting holes, not sure what the specs on those ceriatone chassis are..
lots of folks have built these kits up and then mod them out, before you go swapping out iron, prod around and make sure its the same schem/layout as the amp you describe, it would be very easy to take an OTS50 chassis and stray away from the OTS50 layout.. There is a litany of mods/d-style flavors out there and still call it an OTS50, did you verify nik built it?

Re: Help with 50 watt OT choice

Re: Help with 50 watt OT choice
I used a Fender Prosonic OT in my 3rd gen 50W D clone. Seems to be fine, although I have nothing to compare it to as I have only built the one to date.
Re: Help with 50 watt OT choice
Just a side question for you guys; I'm thinking that any slight variance in the primary's impedance of each of the suggested OTs from the currently installed one would be negligible right?
Re: Help with 50 watt OT choice
If I was going to use a Hammond transformer I would have used the popular 1750N 3k2 50w OT with 4/8/16.

Re: Help with 50 watt OT choice
I gutted an old Fender Bassman 10 for my build, I did have to drill new mounting holes, but not a big deal...jcsifu wrote:Well that's certainly not much to invest and try is it. Did you mount your in Ceriatone chassis or id you roll your own? If Ceriatone, did this OT match up on the mounting?

Re: Help with 50 watt OT choice
Is this one the ot most people are using for OTS 50? Why is this better choice for everyone?M Fowler wrote:If I was going to use a Hammond transformer I would have used the popular 1750N 3k2 50w OT with 4/8/16.
Re: Help with 50 watt OT choice
No I don't think people are using the Hammond transformers for OTS or home built Dumble builds.
But the transformer I listed has been used to build many Marshall type amps.
You can use what ever you want and get the power rating, primary and secondary windings that fit your needs.

Re: re:
I don't think nik would wire this way, the heaters are low and all over the place mixing with cathode and plate, so my guess is not built by him. It seems to be someone's kit that they "managed" to finish, so I have a lot of cleaning up to do...I have time Thursday and will heat the iron up and in the interim will plan out my attack. It's really different working com a layout with no schematic though. I guess first I will just achieve a stable balanced properly wired amp and then go from there...AtomCap wrote:can't go wrong with anything from classictone.net / magnetic components

Re: Help with 50 watt OT choice
I used a Hammond 1760L (Bassman replacement) in my OTS 50 and that seemed to work out great.
