By "original" do you mean from the early 1990's? If so, the schematic and layout drawing is available here: http://www.fender.com/support/articles. ... schematics As on most amps, V1 is nearest the input jack.

Eurotubes which sells JJ tubes has re-tube kits for many amps including the Blues Deville.

They have various tube kits for different breakup or tone.

Here is how to bias the amp.

BD bias...

Post by Scarletgem »

Yes from the early 90's....94 I think.
From what I have read, the original BD has a fixed bias...
From the schematics it looks like V1 is nearest the input ports...which makes sense...I just read the other night that one person posted v1-v3 (L to R looking at the back) which would be back words.
I am setting up this BD for Harp only....so added 2 EH 12AY7s to both V1 and V2...(or V1A and V1B)

This will be my outdoor/large venue giggin box..."can you hear me now?"

How did those 12AY7's sound? I'm tossing around the idea of replacing the 12AX7's in mine as well to round out the tone and mellow it a bit. Is the difference noticeable at middle volume?

Blues Deville Tube Swap

Post by Scarletgem »

Actually it turned out really good. I am going to start lugging the giant thing around to all my gigs...just to move the air...i have some Lone Wolf Boxes to add some breakup. We have 2 guitars, full drum set and bassist to complete with. I can actually crank it up pretty high...

Setting up the tone controls:

1. Turn the treble off completely
2. Bass ideally at 6, no higher than 8
3. Middle at about 3 no higher than 5
4. Presence at 8
5. Turn the master volume all the way up, which actually totally turns this circuit completely off.
6. Bright switch off.

This is using a crystal mic.
If you use a Green Bullet, you may need to set the treble a tad higher as well as the bass.
As far as volume goes, I set it right into the point of nearly feeding back.

My little Kalamazoo may have to stay home for all but the smallest gigs...and one with lots of stairs.
