i believe this will do what but can i retain the second set of input jacks?

On the 5E4-A, I would put a ground between the volume pots, and then when you cascade the stages, break the connection from the normal channel pot's wiper and ground the hanging 270k mix resistor. Then you have to take that wiper over to the bright channel input through a voltage divider (~2:1 ,say). You could use some switching arrangement to break the connection from the #2 input to its 68K, and put the feed from the normal channel pot wiper to the 68k.
