Dumble speaker cab dimensions

Post by jazrok »

Hi

I'm wanting to build a speaker cab for my D clone and was wondering if anyone knows the dimensions of Dumble's 1 x 12 extension cab? The one that Larry Carlton uses with his ODS head. Also it seems to have some sort of port in it. What does this do? Can anyone help?

Cheers

Hi Jasrock:
Try the search function using Normster or Funkalicousgroove as part of the parameter. If you are unsuccessful I'll try digging through the paper later today to help you out.

Alexander believed that the oval port on that cabinet contributed to the overall image of the speaker. He thinks that, sized right, it makes another diaphragm on the backside of the cabinet. I believe him. That cabinet sounds different and IMHO better than the normal open back type.

Some believe it's just an open back cabinet.

I do know that the one I built under his supervision had very specific dimensions. Alas, I don't have those any longer but the hole was sized differently for each speaker brand and type anyway. In those days he used Altec 417C drivers. I've scaled my dimensions off a known HAD build photo from the files section on this forum. Rest assured that it's a 21.5" wide cabinet.

Here's what Leo would do

Post by skyboltone »

If Leo was building a D cabinet back in '57 it might have looked about like this. I'm building two 12" and one 4/10". The picture is what they look like prior to final sanding and tolex. Everything is pine. Dovetail corners. I'll use 11/32 fir ply for the baffle with two scalloped braces (vertical), and 1/4 ply for the rear panel (oval hole) with scalloped braces (horizontal). Interior dimensions are 20" X 21". When I get back to my shop someday, I want to make the front and rear panels out of pine also. I'll use 5/16" front and rear, with a spline joint. The trick is to true the 1" X 12" pine prior to planing. I'm still puzzled as all get out on how I'm gonna put the tolex on without wood showing at the four corners of the front opening.

Thanks heisthl and toneman. I went out into the garage with a pair of sissors and some newspaper and experimented. I think I was crying before I was hurt.

Thanks

They are loading for me? Hmmmm. I'm using image code, do you have it switched off? Here are the links.

If you look at pictures of the early Fender cabs, it appears that the top and the narrow panel are done first, then the two sides. Still don't have it figured out quite right.

Sky, You weren't doing anything wrong. It seems tinypic.com was flagged here at my work as either a gambling or porn site.

Gee wiz, can't a guy just look at amp pics and not be bothered at work?
