Has anyone seen one of these?
I would assume the hardware is junk but if the wood parts are half decent might bee pretty cool.

hahaha I can't even buy the wood for twice that much.

Re: Has anyone seen one of these?
I built a PRS Clone made by Saga.
It had a flamed maple veneer top but they slathered a hard sealer all over it.
When I tried to sand that off I burnt through the veneer in no time.
So a figured maple top was out.
I ended up painting it solid Shoreline Gold.
I consider it to be below a cheap Chinese knockoff quality wise.
I can't tell if these are Saga kits but they are similar.
If you just want to get your feet wet with a guitar project these would be OK.
Good to practice finishing skills but many times the supplies out price the project.
But don't expect greatness from them.
I can't remember the sellers name but there was a guy that made better LP kits that were pretty well received.
Several guys at ReRanch built them and they said they were good.
You had a choice of maple veneer or a thick maple cap which cost more but well worth it in my opinion.
I think they were around $300.

I was thinkin about buildin one with my 15 year old but he won't play it if its junk.He was automaticly drawn to my niceset guitars as soon as he started playin but always wants to play the Tele I built for some reason.I think its cause he doesn't have to worry about dingin it or wiping it down and puttin back in a case.

The fret material can't be very good, but man.. I would buy one and recarve the neck to be heavenly.

I built one of the Saga Tele kits. Left the neck unfinished. If it ever warps it will give me an excuse to upgrade the neck. Mine is quite playable. I used the reranch lake placid blue.
It's a great way to learn how to do finishes and not be out a lot of money if you screw it up.

Tom, are you thinking of the Bulldog kits? If so, yeah, I like them better than Saga. They're better quality, and unsealed, so you don't have that gondo mess of plastic to sand off before finishing. I have an SG kit of theirs thats in the priming phase (and has been for a year or so...man, am I lazy).Structo wrote:I can't remember the sellers name but there was a guy that made better LP kits that were pretty well received.

Re: Has anyone seen one of these?
I've heard good reviews on the Guitarfetish kits. Haven't built one, though.
I have a Saga LP currently under construction. The body sealer is indeed a bear. The neck sealer came off nicely with Citrus Strip. No chemical stripper I tried, even nasty industrial stuff from a boat yard, touched the stuff on the body. I got the back and sides stripped with a heat gun. The heat gun loosened the sealer on the top, but it's taking some careful sanding to get it off without damaging the top veneer. If I blow through it, it will be dark mahogany. If I save it, it will get orange shellac applied in the French polish method.

I use Aircraft stripper and disposable stiff brushes to remove finish on instruments for restoration. 40s and 50s Martins.. Everything. Stay away from bindings by at least a 1/4 inch and use a cabinet scraper.
Dimensionally a guitar is done. Sanding is the wrong thing to do! The human eye can detect very small variations in a curve. If you touch it lightly with paper for just a second too long you get a flat on your curve.
Just sayin'...
I can fully strip an acoustic guitar in about 25 minutes and that includes cleanup.

Have you ever tried a heat gun on a solid body?
Works pretty well but keep the gun moving.
or it can turn into fire wood.
