50w 102 style build

Post by rogb »

Hmm seems like I started this a long time ago now. I wont bore you with too much detail as there are plenty of #102s on here.

I built the cab last summer - black suede vox cloth with a fantastic CE silver chassis along with jborders amazing boards. All the goodies courtesy of TAG members!

G-12-65 Heritage 15ohm installed

A JCM800 2204 got in the way somehow so they both got finished at much the same time. So now they are paired as the Evil Twins. This is a great amp combo!

I got some NOS resistors from markoparts and some NOS tubes on the way now from HiTest.

I installed the Precision PS because I had it but I was concerned the amp felt a little lifeless so a classic PS was made and I like this a lot more, feels more responsive.

The FET is a really nice feature, if you need a little extra it can be found here.

Iron is a Magnetic Components Bassman set from Triode USA. Voltages were some 30v high as my wall voltage can hit 248v,
I installed a 30v 50w zener from Nebraska Surplus and it works just fine!

All the voltages are in the ball park for this configuration and it sounds superb.

Guitar selection has been tricky but now I have a Little 59 in the Strat bridge I have enough to hit the 102 and Marshall hard if needed.

I have only played it out once but I was happy with the clean. The NOS parts should help the OD along with the 'bucker and D. Allen Dovers in middle and neck.

The Tele of course sounds superb through the 102.
Thank you TAG for the means to put this dream into reality.

As for Feedback City, I think this is getting to be in the neighborhood...

Looks great! What differences were there between the precision and classic power supplies you tried? I think of them as being essentially equivalent except for the filters beyond the reservoir being stacked vs. single caps. Were there differences in the effective size of the caps too?

Great job! I'm starting to prefer the classic style PS for the 102 circuit too now that I've done one build with and one without. It's looser and softer, but seems to have more character to it.

Thanks guys.
You know, just receiving that beautiful chassis from Eric gave me the impetus for the build. The CE is really a work of art in my eyes, all the boards fitted perfectly.
It is class - end of!

As said, the Classic feels looser somehow, maybe more touch sensitive?

The preamp cap jammed in right by v1, maybe something to do with it, compared to the long run from the PPS.

The lack of 3M7 of balance resistors compared to the PPS's cap stack?
The resistors help spread the HV around while the Classic doesn't use the resistor/cap array?
I looked at the 2nd/3rd Gen also Tony's Feedback City 102 and went from there.

It definitely gives up the goods easier with the Classic, feedback wise. LNFB switched out too helps.
I hope my new preamp glass will help to add the final polish.

In the 2204, I put in RTF EL34s and a couple of Tungsram ECC83's yesterday , burned em in for like 8 hours, really starting to sound good, also the new G12-65 is easing up too.

I think the 102 will really start to mellow out in a couple of weeks.

Rog, you have made some things of beauty there, I'm loving the black suede! If it sounds half as good as it looks, it must sound killer!

Congrats on yet another great build, you must be building up quite a collection?

All the best,

Paul.
