And I can appreciate this (even without pot, did enough (along with ((other chemicals) yes I use to program in lisp) in my youth).

Gong. Now you're talking! Two of my favorite guitarists were in that rotating line-up: Steve Hillage and Allan Holdsworth.
Hillage shines on all the Gong! stuff he contributed to.
Holdsworth does some amazing playing on Gazeuse!

Honestly, probably my all time favorite band. It amazes me how they can go from what sounds like full out improvisation back to a tight change up.
Yeah, Hillage and Holdsworth. Two amazing talents.
What's funny is back in the late seventies and early eighties, I was copping Hillage licks, but as I get older, I find myself drawn to the stuff Didier Malherbe was doing on sax.
To this day, every drummer friend I make, I make sure to play them Gong's 'Master Builder' followed by 'The Glorious Om Riff' from Hillage's Green. The look on their face as they're trying to figure out the timing is always hilarious.

I saw Gong around 2001 when I was living in Portland, OR. The show was fantastic.
Unfortunately, my wife can't stand them. Poor girl should have learned an instrument and did more drugs when she was growing up. What's crazy, is that one of her favorite Seattle-based bands, 'Sky Cries Mary', is to me, clearly Gong-influenced:

wow..I like that 'Sky Cries Mary'...reminds me of the band 'Levitation' from around the same era, but i little less agressive http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8u2EtXJQUTE
less jazzier than Gong...maybe she can't get past that and David Allen LOL
You have to admit...he's a trip in his own right.

What a cool bunch of guys in Gong.
At a 70's UK festival (Watchfield) Gong came on stage around midnight.
I remember Steve Hillage dedicating a song to "All the chillum smokers in the audience".
A thousand glowing red ends was the reply.
Memories...

This isn't the show I saw, but it's the same lineup and same tour:
