The truss rod thread reminded me of a problem I have. I don't want to hijack the thread, so I'll start a separate one.
My Stratocaster fell over a couple years ago, and it feels like the glue holding the skunk stripe in the back of the neck cracked. The guitar still plays just fine, but I can FEEL the rough, offset spot where the skunk stripe runs through the neck.
It hasn't affected the guitar in any way as far as I can tell, but it just bothers me knowing that it is cracked.
I don't know if there is an easy way to fix this, or if it is even worth worrying about. Any luthiers out there?

Re: Skunk Stripe
I expect that the old skink stripe could be routed out and replaced with a new piece.

Is the finish raised along the edge of the stripe and maple in the affected area, or is there a depression where finish was lost?

Re: Skunk Stripe
Get a long leather shoe string and some white glue. You need wax paper and a mallet.
Wash the neck with a damp soapy cloth. Suds are ok. Rinse away all nuck nuck.
When you wobble neck does stripe move?
Ok. Glue all around stripe and work in with your fingers. Oh shit. We needed gloves. It's a little messy. Oh well. We have a soapy wet cloth.
Now wax paper around neck tightly. Start wrapping the leather string from the body end. VERY TIGHTLY!
As you get every couple inches tap over the leather lacing with the mallet specifically in the area over the stripe.
See where this is going? As much glue as you can work in, as tight as you can wrap, and tap with the mallet harder than yiu think you probably should. The leather binds but protects the neck from the tapping and wrapping crap.
After making sure by eye and obsessive checks with your fingernail as you go that it is working do whatever it takes to make the lace tighter.
After 24 hours remove lace and wax paper. Wash off squeeze out with soapy water. (and even a razor if you really know what I mean, if not please ask)
Dry wiffa dry clawth. Whew!
Rock on.

Re: Skunk Stripe
Mine had too much skunk and when it stood up it keeled right over...oh wait that's a different problem...nevermind.My Stratocaster fell over a couple years ago...
Seriously, if it has been several years and it is not effecting playability, I wouldn't mess with. Sounds like it could be alot more trouble than it is worth.
Re: Skunk Stripe
The impact must have loosened the insert enough to cause the crack that you notice.boots wrote:The truss rod thread reminded me of a problem I have. I don't want to hijack the thread, so I'll start a separate one.

Does the adjustment still work ?
Where is the worst part you notice, toward the heel or near the headstock ?
There's a lot of tension on a neck, with the strings counteracted by the trussrod.
You could lightly sand over the rough spot and touchup with some lacquer but if the trussrod is still loose it will just crack again if it's not re-glued.

Re: Skunk Stripe
It feels like the insert is still flush with the nec on the low E side, but the insert is depressed very slightly on the high E side between about the 3rd and 9th frets.
I don't know if the adjustment still works - I don't have any reason to think it doesn't. My neck relief is just the way I like it, and I have never changed it since I got it set to my liking.
The leather thong and wax paper idea sounds reasonable, but kinda scary at the same time. Maybe I will get brave some day and try it!
The neck also needs a fret job in the worst way, but I am kinda shy to mess with the neck. I don't suppose anybody knows of a good luthier or shop in the Albuquerque/Santa Fe area? There's nobody I would trust with my baby here in this area, and I really don't want to ship the guitar off for a fret job.
