I can add to that: getting input and output cables mixed up.

Thump on the speaker cone and the guitar strings wiggle ?

Yes, a lot of thumping.
Like when a friend's voice from NYC suddenly emerged from my laptop saying Tony? Tony?
Not having any micro handy I rammed the headphones into the mic socket and managed to make myself heard by shouting back to New York. Hey, a headphone is just a mic backwards.

With a dummy load plugged in, an amp will not produce sound.
You can scope the signal all the way through.
But it works better with a real speaker plugged in.
However the hiss & hum level is much better with the dummy load.
Just not good for guitar.

Dummy load. I hear that.
All excited. Put head back together. Fired it up. Nothing. But.. But.. if I put the preamp tubes back in it works fine.
Sure. Right?

I had a speaker cable go bad while I was trouble shooting an amp.
I never powered it up for very long because there was no output.
Now I check everything......
