Most economical speaker cabinet?

Post by tomrasdf »

Well, I like the clone I just built so much that I'm going to start using it full time. This means I can sell my Orange combo and bulky 2x12 cabinet. To make rehersal's a small gigs easy, I'm looking for a nice 1x12 or 1x15 that isn't a pain to transport.

Any suggestions as far as a really solid, good sounding cabinet for cheap that would sound good with a d-clone? Beauty is not necessary. The less I spend on a cabinet, the more I can spend on a good sounding speaker. I'm always on ebay, but I know sufficiently little about cabinets that I'd have no idea what I was really getting. I like the closed back / slit back sound best, and I really liked the EVM 15 clip on the speaker test clips posted a while ago on this forum.

Well this is a DIY forum... :D

You might consider building a EV TL806 style cab (Mesa Thiele equiv.). These are inexpensive to make, great sounding, compact cabs that work well with many speakers.

Yeah, I've been watching them. Problem is, I need a 4 ohm speaker (I'm using the stock bassman iron that came with the donor amp). And I would prefer to take the DIY route, but I just graduated form college and it might be a while before I have access to tools to make a decent cab (I'm living in my friend's basement for the time being).

Weber makes a 1x12 that I can get uncovered for $165, which is about my speed, but I have no idea what makes a good speaker cab, and concequently, if the weber even IS a good cab. Are there any makers who have a good product that can be had for cheap?

Nice looking cabs by the way. Those look perfect. I'll definately file that away for when I have the available resources. Thanks!

Just my opinion/experience - that Bassman OT will be plenty happy with an 8 ohm load.

Thanks! Skybltone beat me to the punch - those are the plans I used with minor mods to accomodate some panels to vary the port size depending on which speaker I'm using. I installed wood inserts (which you can see in the photo) for bolting on covers to decrease the port size.

These cabs sound great with EVM 12Ls, Scholtz, Weber Californias.... Not so great with G12-65s and EMI Cannibus Rex (which seem to prefer the more lively partially open back, floating baffle style cab). Disclaimer: These are my preferences, YMMV. :)

I went with the two rock for now. Once I have the tools, I think I'll roll my own, but in the mean time I'll have something nice that will hold it's value until I'll ready to pass it along. Thanks so much for the input!
