Depends on your taste.

Winged c' are a popular choice.

Personally I prefer the new Tungsols for a nice fendery clean tone.

Vintage Sylvania 6l6gc, or in some cases 6bg6ga Syl's with adapter socket. Syl 6bg6ga did not work well at all in my Ceriatone SSS though. They sound glorious in my 50w C-tone HRM and 50w Marsh Overlord.

I've had good luck with the last TAD 6L6 STR's I bought.

I used to use the Winged C tubes but they raised the price dramatically.

What plate voltage are you running? I wanted to try these, but most things that i have read says these are only good for about 400 volts or so.

I fell into a couple dozen NOS RCA 5881's brown bases and a Bogen PA ~6 years ago and decided to build a Dumble'esq amp around them.

I had a few quads of Sovtek 5881WXTs from years of Ampeg V4 work and used those to start it up. They always held up and sounded just fine at the hellish V4 voltages.

The WXT's sounded awesome in that build! Unfortunately, the wouldn't fit in the Bogen housing/shell (which was the ONLY thing I ended up using from the carcass!). :x

The RCAs sound great too...but...there was just something special about the WXTs that really appealed to my ear and touch.

They are inexpensive enough to consider giving them a shot. I will wager that.....at worst...they will end up being your gig spares!!

Cheers,
Dave O.

68 Twin PT, plates around 435 last time I checked.
Not heavy use, but regular use, holding up well.

I came out to Boston from Chicago to go to college. I was gigging in a bar when a guy enthusiastically told me he thought I was a "pissah guitah playah."

I was a little taken aback because I though i had played pretty well that night.

I have since become fluent in New Englandese.

Wicked pissah true story!!

RCA blackplates for me. Short bottle. Tried NOS Sylvania 6L6GC, allegedly preferred by Dumble, but they were too thin for me. Love that blackplate warmth! Used or NOS.

Haven't tried '60s GE 6L6GC but have heard they are good too.
