Re: ODS tubes
I've only done limited testing but I've found that for preamp tubes, V1 and V2 EH tubes seem best when I compare JJ ECC83 and ECC803, Sovtek, and a few others. For the PI I like the JJ ECC83 best. For power tubes I've tested WingedC, Sovtek 5881/6L6GC and JJ's. In my 6V6 amps I've tried EH and JJ. Hands down winner for 6V6 is the JJ, the 6L6 types are all fine, but I had some rattling problems with the WingedC's. Suprisingly I like the Sovtek a lot.mingus wrote:What tubes (GE, Phillips, Mullard, etc.) match up the best with an ODS? Do Fender style/spec tubes work best or are there other (preamp and power amp) tubes or values that one should consider to get the best voicing?
Re: ODS tubes
5881's can only support plate voltages of up to 400 volts, right? did you measure the plate voltage when you used the sovtek 5881's? I'm just curious since I was about to buy some Tung-Sols

Re: ODS tubes
A Sovtek 5881 is not a "Real" 5881, and will actually handle 500 volts very gracefully. A "Real" 5881 will handle a little over 400 but not much. Keep in mind that if you run your screens around 300Vdc you can actually put close to 700V on a Sovtek 5881.
My current fav's in the ODS are:
1. NOS Chinese, Gray or Silver plate
2. JJ ECC83S, but only certain ones in both v1 and v2
3. GT 12AX7M in V1 but not V2
3 Tung-Sol 12AX7 v2 not v1
4 EH 12AX7 in v2 not v1
In thePI I usually use a JJ, an EI if I can find one, or a NOS 5751.
For 6L6's I do like the TAD short bottle, the Winged C, and The Reflektor Svetlana's.
EL34's I'm JJ's all the way.
