I'm giving up on noiseless single coils.

Sometimes I hate these threads. I am building a strat right now. I have everything except the pup's at present. I do have some regular fender 57's to use until I decide what set I want to go with. Now I want to try ALL the items listed in this thread which is obviously not realistic. The biggest problem though is that in the past, everytime I have listened to the hype on a piece of gear that is supposed to be "IT"...... I always end up back at the tried and true vintage (or vintage repro) unit.

Maybe we need to set up a "Pickup Library" where we trade around pickups to people could try before they buy.

As soon as the GFS's come in, I'll pull the Dimarzio's. Anyone is welcome to try them as long as you leave the current lead lengths.

Doh! I just remembered. The pole stagger is for a lefty, so that might not be the best way to evaluate them, unless you're going for the reverse-stagger Hendrix thing.

It's hard for me to describe what I don't like about them. The word "hard" comes to mind. Perhaps lacking in dynamics. But it's not so much the sound of them, they'd probably fool anyone in an audience. It's more "feel", they don't respond to your dynamics the way a real single coil does.

in my country there's a saying "there's no bad slop for a good pig". I'm happy with both dimarzio and kinman humbucking pickups, but I can attribute that to my lack of finesse for single coil sound rather than any talent. But say, Paul Gilbert uses Area pickups and recently his signature Injectors and I don't hear him complaining.
And hum-canceling for me is a big bonus, hate noise gates.

I know some companies do pass around sets for this purpose. I think Zexcoil did this for a time. It's a bolt in Fender sized pickguard. I have a G*L so I had to swap some things over, but I'm quite pleased with them. Scott's a good guy, and maybe he'd get a "round robin" going with another set of samples..

+1. I am currently using a set of Keystones in my Tele, Bill's take on a traditional sound, and I like them a lot. Cannot beat the price for a quality product.
I also have Microcoils for the Tele, and an L280 middle, and L48TL,a great pickup, and a set of L45s for my Start. They are all well made, good sounding pickups, at bargain prices.
Plus you are supporting a crusty old individual with very strong views on pickups. He's a character-I can get behind that.

Yes, it's excruciating isn't it? I'm building one too. I have a cheap set of GFS ceramics and was looking for something along the lines of the Texas Special I have in my Tele. Then I stumble across this thread and others on ReRanch...

I've also used the Dimarzio Area Ts and Area 67/67/61 which are pretty good ... but these systems let me use really nice pickups.

I like originals, Duncans, Dim Ar Zios, and even EMGs.
