Funny Phone Call

Post by dreric »

I got a call from a guy from India yesterday. He said the Microsoft contracted his company to resolve security issues. He said that the MS security center was getting reports that my computer was infected with malware and was sending out bogus emails. He was calling to help me fix the problem.

I said that I'd never hear of MS contacting a user and that he'd have to verfify something get me take him seriously. He had me look up a computer ID from the c prompt, he knew the number. So I took the bait.

Next he had me open a "run" screen and type "eventvwr" from there we saw lots of error messages. Next we looked at "preftc" and there were even more error messages etc. He was being too nice for tech support. After we saw all the error messages he said that he'd need to send me over to tech support and they would help me resolve them.

So I asked, how much is this going to cost. He said that MS contracted them and they should be able to do everything without charge but if fixing things require software down loads there would be a charge. I said I was out of time and asked for his number 1-888-779-5262, they answer "technical department"

I'd not that computer savvy, pretty sure this was a scam, has anyone else experienced this?

Those guys call me once in a while. Sometimes they call more than once a day. Sometimes weeks or months go by. They always call again. I usually cut the guy off and ask him how he knows I've got a computer. From there, depending on my mood....
-I don't have a computer.
-Why would I tell you if I had a computer?
-Do you know if my computer is on or off?
-Where did you say you were calling from?
-How did you get this phone number?
-Do you know who I am? (Like I'm someone important)
After a while the guy gets tired or else I do and hang up.
This is a new kind of scam. I can't be certain because I've never been victimized, but I figure they ask you to go to a web address and from their, you become the victim.

The other day a guy calls me and asks, "How are ya?" I ask who's calling, etc.? Every time he says something, he follows with, "How are ya?" I keep telling him that I'm not going to tell him how I am and that it's none of his business. I finally get it out of him that he wants to sell me an oil well!

It's as bad as it ever was. Don't talk to anyone you don't know or that you haven't called.

The only legit call of this nature I ever received was from the credit card fraud unit. They called and wanted to discuss recent suspicious activity. I told her I wanted to call the phone number on the back of my card and speak to her. She said OK and told me exactly what to say when I called. I had her back on the phone in less than 30 seconds. This was impressive. Indeed, someone in another city was running up charges on my card number. They shut it down and sent me a new card.

Yeah they get more clever everyday.

You need to verify who they are.

And, don't ever give them remote control of your computer.

I disable anything to do with remote desktop or any of those type services.

Microsoft would never call you. If you were generating spam your provider would block your network and you'd have to call them.

I am all for putting gas on scammers and throwing lit matches at them until something good happens.

Heard about this on Kim Kommando at least a year ago.

I listen to too much talk radio...from financial to cigars to tech stuff, gardening and home improvement.
Sometimes it comes in handy.

I got this one...twice! I didn't believe them at first, but both times my card had been scanned at a swipe-and-pump gas station up the street.
Too bad that initial call seemed so suspicious at first..I nearly hung up.

To watch a criminal defile himself with a funny sign is at least a small slice of justice in the Universe.
