Still no power here in Jersey. Shut the generator down at 11pm last night. Got up this morning to start it back up at 7am. It ran for about 2 mins and shut down. No spark. I was hoping for bad gas and a fouled plug but after cleaning the plug and draining the gas.....no luck. I removed the engine cover to get a look at the magneto. Reset a few connections but didn't find anything obviously wrong. Put it back together and it's been running for over an hour without a hiccup.

It's a good I'm to to be a mechanically inclined geek.....

My dog woke me at 4:30am today. She won't go out in a storm like that, so I guess she finally reached her limit. Ran down the front steps and 3' into the street before she did her business. This was about as fast as I've ever seen it happen. This is a dachshund who has to smell everything in sight and what you can't see before she will do anything. If one can have a sense of humor at 4:30am, this will bring it out.

We've been without internet or land line since Monday afternoon, but surprisingly, power stayed on. I've got my cell phone tethered to the computer -- not fast enough for graphics, but good for text and a few images. I am grandfathered under Verizon's unlimited data plan, a real disincentive to upgrade my Droid and allows me to do this with impunity.

Rain is very light now, but is supposed to continue until Wednesday. I took a small amount of water in the basement and in my home office (1st floor) through what appears to be a leaky window header.

I'm glad everyone seems to have weathered the storm fairly well.

uggggg....more generator issues this afternoon. Same magneto problem. I think it's just the grounding circuit (killswitch) for the magneto. I disconnected it and it's running now (obviously since I am posting). Only problem is the only way to shut down the generator is run it out of gas OR use needle nose pliers to pull the spark plug wire.

I went out a little while ago. My block is not too bad but it's pretty bad around here. Lots of downed trees, blocked roads. I saw a missing traffic light and the one for the other side of the road was hanging by a thread. I didn't realize how hard my neighborhood got hit.

Old skool kill switch.........slide the spark plug boot back to exposing the tip, using any of several methods(alligator clip jumper, screwdriver, etc), ground the spark plug tip to the chassis and the motor will shut right off.

Got power back here in Mt Bethal Pa yesterday.I was just cooking some frozen pizza on the gas grill.Yahoo.We had 8 extra kids staying here as well.

Yea I remember the old cheapy killswitch that Briggs and Stratton used to use. The metal clip on the spark plug. Press it down on the exposed plug tip and ground out the spark. I will get this rewired and fixed when the power comes back on. Right now I just need to run. Gas lines around here are insane. IF the station is pumping the line is several hours long. I drive about an hour to my brothers house where they have power and the lines aren't so long.

I feel for hurricane effected peoples,You guys really have to be prepared if you live in a low lying areas near the water. Everything you would need for camping and prep for two weeks minimum.

Still dark and cold here. Problem with New England (and other places): we live in a forest but never allow forest fires to burn dead trees or kill off old weak ones. Any kind of storm and they all fall down.

I saw that devastation in Queens where over 80 homes burned to the ground.

Firefighters couldn't get there due to the flood.

So, you have a home, you evacuated because of the storm and flood and when you come back the house is burned to the foundation......


Man, that would be rough.

So I am watching the news and I see footage of several people, mostly women if that matters, complaining and bitching that the Red Cross is not on their street helping them. One woman was whining how the Red Cross is helping in other areas, but not hers. Now I understand that the storm destroyed a lot, pretty much everything in some areas. I understand the situation is dire for some. I also understand that some didn't bother to evacuate when told to do so. What I don't understand is the view that someone HAS to be on your street 'fixing' your problem. Like it is a God given right that some volunteers have to arrive promptly to take care of you. If you live in an area where storms are frequent/likely or there is a past history of problems then you should be ready to deal with the consequences when it happens. I am not against helping people in need and I don't like people suffering, but the bitching I heard was really low-class self-entitled horseshit that I found stupid and offensive. Off my soapbox now...

If I manage to pound any one lesson into my kids heads, it is that self-entitlement has to be one of the most disgusting of human displays. I asked my thirteen year old son to do something once and he asked me how much I was going to pay him. I said, "How about room and board for the next week?"

After the Sept 11 attack the Red Cross handed out food vouchers, checks, metrocards, clothes, and all sorts of toiletries to the area residents and workers.

I never received a bill of any sort.

I did get put on a mailing list asking me to help others in need if I could, and I did give back what I was able.

I'm not saying they didn't do that in the past, but my present experience was completely different.

When I was in the Marines the Red Cross got word to my command and my unit pulled me out of the field for emergency leave, got flight back so could attend my father's funeral so for me I thanked them and my brother for being able to do that for me.
