rotary switch for treble cap/coupling cap in rocket

Post by johndandry »

Looking to add a treble cap or coupling cap rotary switch in my build...or maybe both in one. Will the rotary switch pop when switched while the amp is on? What kind of switch would work best? Maybe a 3 or 4 position would work.

Yeah, it will pop and tick a little. Just make sure you get a MBB switch. (make before break)

Some of us use a 3 position, center off, 2 pole mini toggle.
1 treble cap permanently in the circuit, paralleled to the toggle switch commons. The top & bottom pins connected to your value of choice.
With 100pf permanent (center off), 150pf on top gets you 250pf.
390pf on bottom gets you 490pf.
Large value resistors will get rid of the pop by keeping the caps charged.

ok, any amp rating suggestion for that application?

On wiring the switch, whats the best way. across the PF cap on the board or one end hanging on the treble pot?
Thanks!

Is a 5A@120v mini toggle ok to use for the treble cap switch? I have a 5A DPDT on/off/on.

This is how I usually install a 3 position, center off mini toggle.
One cap across the top pins & on across the bottom 2.
The caps are glued to the top & bottom of the switch.
I turned the Volume pot 90 degrees to keep the wires to the mini toggle as short as possible.
I've had better luck with this setup than the traditional TW design.
This is a big problem area - especially with the express & liverpool.
I "borrowed" this bright switch method from Collosal & Mark Fowler.
Thanks to Dave & Mark.
Hope you don't mind me sharing.
Good Luck,
Bob

Forgot to say I've had no electrical problems with 125v mini toggles.
Mechanically they aren't as robust as the standard sizes.
