Allen amps question
Anyone built one of these?
I am really curious how he gets these numbers:
Brown Sugar - 30W with 6L6s, 15W with 6V6s
Accomplice - 22 watts (with 6V6 power tubes), 35 watts (with 6L6 power tubes)

Re: Allen amps question
Cathode bias? or maybe @ 400vdc with 4-5K primary fixed bias with 6L6, and a little lower voltage for the 6V6s. Is that your question? Are you surprised by how low or high the ratings are?
Re: Allen amps question
Haven't built one but have only read good things about his kits.

Re: Allen amps question
I am wondering how he doubles the wattage simply by changing tubes - or maybe the amp is tailored to 6L6 if you order it that way?
Re: Allen amps question
The Brown Sugar is cathode bias and here is what David Allen says.
The 6V6 tubes will give an earlier breakup. The 6L6 and EL34 tubes will provide the most clean head room. When using 6V6 power tubes you must use a 5Y3 rectifier tube. When using 6L6 or EL34 power tubes use a GZ34/5AR4 rectifier tube. You should also use matched power tubes.

Re: Allen amps question
The Accomplice has a 25k bias pot so you can adjust for your 6V6 or 6L6 tube choice.

Re: Allen amps question
As far as the fixed bias model the Trainwreck express works exactly the same. with EL34s or 6V6s without rebias.

Re: Allen amps question
I'm in the process of my second Sweet Spot build.
Really recommend if your looking for the classic fender tones.
I've run NOS 6V6's and 6L6's in it no problems.
I've not purchased an entire kit, but have chassis and transformers,
boards and other misc. things from Mr. Allen. He has great knowledge and top notch parts and service.
No affiliation just wanted to give my .02

Re: Allen amps question
I think I get it - he uses the 5Y3 to knock down the plate voltage for those 6V6 tubes
Re: Allen amps question
The Brown Sugar is Cathode Biased.
- Uses a 300ohm 20W cement resistor.
5AR4 for use with 6L6/EL-34
5Y3 for use with 6V6
