Capacitor Orientation

Post by megawhat »

Hello, thought I'd ask this question here.
I just got a couple of 6PS caps and having read Randall Aiken's article about foil orientation, http://aikenamps.com/OutsideFoil.htm, I had a go at using my scope to find the outer foil.

Now, I could see an amplitude difference in induced frequency when swapping the probe and the ground lead over.

I wondered if anybody here had tried this method? I found that out of the two 47nf 6PS caps I had, they both had the outer foil at different ends, and one of three 22nf caps did too. To be honest, I don't know how these caps get the lettering printed, so it might all be at the same end or maybe the construction method means the factory can't tell, so they don't mark it on the cap. I think I went into it expecting to get the same orientation (to the lettering) from each cap, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Just wondered if anyone else had tried this and what results you got.

There is not corrispondance between the printing orientation and the foil orientation. Just use the scope method or the guitar-input lead-channel method.

Cheers. Using the scope method, it seems the difference is only fairly slight compared to some. Anyway, It's a cool little test!

I used my scope as well. Some had little or no difference. Some, it was huge.

Thanks to this forum I learnt about this phenomenon! Thank you Guys!

I've allowed myself translating the information to Polish so my friends in Poland could benefit from this knowledge as well!
