So I want to eventually become an amp tech...

Post by tribi9 »

There isn't much competition around but In order to achieve it, I think it is important that I brush up a little on my Math skills.
So I signed up for physics and math at my local Adult School. I got through day 1 fine and im already looking forward to learning as much as I can.

Also my parts to finish up my second amp should be here by the end of the week.

Carry on and enjoy this fine Wednesday gents. :)

I'd ditch building amps and start buying broken amps and perfect your skills on repairing them. Working on troubleshooting, circuit flow, schematic reading, and diagnositics. You wont make any money if you are slow, and if you are wrong it can get costly quick!!!
understand bias, tube testing, and how to read measurements from your test equipment correctly. as well as how to service and maintain your own test equipment.

you could fix 20 amps and blow up one and be in the negative $ plus shotty work gets around a lot faster by word of mouth then how great something was done.

probably best to get a business license and insurance as well before you start so you are not liable directly for injury suffered by the user if they open up the amp after you were inside it and get fried.

Thx for the input. I have done lots of recaps, and minor stuff to peoples amps. I have done about 10 amps in total. I once rebuilt a BF bandmaster that was heavily modded, missing tube sockets, jacks etc. I guess I can work against a layout but I know there are gaps in my logic. There are certain things that confuse me still. Now that I have built my second amp I think It's time to do some heavy reading. I went to the local amp guy to see if he would take me in as an apprentice but he said he did have somebody. :(
