IEC Filters

Has anyone been using those IEC power line filters in their amps? If so which ones have you used? I'm considering using them but am not sure which to go with..... With the caps to ground is there danger of electrocution (death caps)? Mouser has some from Schaffner, Schurter, and TE Connectivity/Corcom.

i used a all in one unit built into the socket on a build, it sits in line with the input and fits the standard power socket cut out

Some chassis can get a bit tight, i looked at putting one in a champ build but gave in due to lack of room plus the lead dress needed a bit of a tickle which cured the problem

For whatever reason I have dozens of these things. I use them when I can fit them. The do reduce/eliminate noise introduced from the AC line (I tried flipping a light switch with and without one, you can hear the switch without one) and are easy enough to install and use. I don't use them only because I hate making the big hole I need to in order to fit one in a chassis, but I have used them often in the past with success.

Check out ApexJr. Steve had some very inexpensive ones.
I've been thinking of incorporating these too.

You can find these in computer power supplies.

I think I have replaced more of those supplies than any other component in PC's for friends and family.

I definitely have room in the chassis so I might give them a try. I saw the ones at apexjr but only after I placed an order so I might get a couple from mouser with my order.

Anyone know which would be best suited for this type of application? Medical ones with low leakage current? Looking at the schematic there are caps from line to ground which makes me think of death caps and getting lips shocked by microphones.

The corcom ones are cheap but look like they are just caps with no inductors. The schaffner ones are ~7$ depending.

I might be over thinking it...... what else is new?

I bought a bunch of them a while back from Apex Jr. I use them when I have the room. I've had results similar to Cliff. They do seem to filter a lot of hash off of the AC.

In the machine controls world, testing for all types of electrical noise is a big thing. Worldwide TUV is one of the biggest independent test houses.
They use Schaffner filters.
This may or may not be relevant, but I thought I'd mention it.

I would love to take one of those apart.

I have an old power conditioner that I picked up on a sale.

I figured it would have inductors and MOV's and the like to keep the power steady.

Nope, just a few MOV's like a cheap surge suppressor.

Basically an empty enclosure with the MOV's on the outlets.

in high-end hifi they are verboten as the claim is they have negative effects the sound. of course this isn't hifi. just thought I'd throw it out there.

Naah.... way too cheap for HiEnd HiFi..... anything cheap is verboten, no matter how good it works.....
