should I attempt this?

Post by andrew »

evening all, I have a choke that will just handle the current for the screens on the output tubes. What if rather than the usual power string I have one choke from the first filter cap handling the screens only and a second choke also coming off of the first filter cap that services the PI and V1? The first cap is 80uf, ss rectified 260 vt PT. Any advice. Thank you.

Could I get more current handling capacity by hooking the two chokes in parallel and have a normal power string? One has 75ma and the other has 40ma. I would do it the right way and buy the correct choke but it's rather tight these days. Thanks.

What amp is this for and how much power output?

I don't know that much about chokes but usually you want to decouple between nodes on the power supply.

Chokes are pretty cheap.

The Twin Reverb choke for example is good for 4x 6L6 and is $12.95

Marshall chokes are a bit more and for a JCM800 style it is $22.95

Don't let that smoke out!

What amp are you building that needs 75ma on the screens ?

What preamp current are you expecting?

thanks for the replies. The amp has 4 el84s and 2 preamp tubes. The Hammond 30 H choke only has a 40 ma current capability and that is just enough for the 4 el84s (that is 10 ma for each screen). I thought I could branch off the first cap and have the choke take care of the screens and have the other branch set up to take care of the preamp ( this separate branch having a power string with or without a choke ) I hope this is clearer.
Structo you changed avatars. I felt more akin to the old one- it is much like myself.
Thanks again.

Ah....

...Why don't you use the 75ma choke?

Anyway, unless you're doing something strange in the preamp, I would have thought it would only need a few ma more ( 5 ??) and as such, wouldn't break the deal - the Hammond choke will handle a little bit more current than the 40ma, albeit its inductance will drop slightly. I would think that it's near enough to be worth a try. Just leave a big enough space to fit a different choke if it doesn't.

I can't see anything wrong (electrically speaking) with using 2 chokes and splitting the supply - it just seems wasteful! :)
