Yes this is material we haven't seen before. It would appear theat Ken standardized his power board between 1983 and 1985. The shape of the power board is the same as a Express just with the component layout different for the bias. Cool stuff!! Now if someone would just post a gut shot of a Rocket

Dear Dana

Isn't that the big one, a gut shot of a Rocket. I have come close a couple of times, but it is hard to convince someone that you will treat their pictures with respect and comply with their wishes. I believe I have a good track record in this area, but the risk of getting kicked out of the Trainwreck army does put fear into those individuals.

Personally, I don't think it will be all that much of a revelation when it finally arrives, and it will eventually turn up. Of course some Trainwreck owners will gasp and the hangers-on will be even more shocked!
Then six months will go by and someone will remark how the amps are fetching more money than ever, and of course we'll all roll our eyes knowing it was all a storm in a tea cup. The frustrating thing is that doesn't help you now.

I think the best thing to do is listen to the various Rocket recordings you can get your hands on and build a rough prototype and see how it sounds. The prototype I built had some noise issues (that I wasn't prepared to persist with), but tonally it sounded a real lot like the MP-3's of the Rocket amp that had been posted up by the Rocket owner.

Personally Dana, I think you'll nail the tone without too many difficulties. Should the gut shots turn up, well you'll find you were on there right path anyway. This was certainly the case prior to the Fran shots turning up.
Yours Sincerely

I got alll of the photos and can send them to you when I get home this evening. I just got my (Ginger Style) PS board populated and will be using that for my Rocket build. I hope to have it completed this weekend if everthing goes right. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Don't worry about the pictures. I found them. The next question is who is going to ask him if he'd like to make a few extra bucks on the sale by selling extra photo's?

The two resistors in the output stage are interesting. What is it with the tape that runs parallel with the heaters and in line with the power tubes?
Then there is the bit of wood between the transformers.

All food for thought I suppose.

The tape is some weather stripping that he used to dampen chassis vibration and it suposedly would help with microphonics. The wood between the trannies is there to support the trannys. He also put a dowel inside the chassis. The chassis he used were so thin this was an efforrt to keep the trannys from caving the chassis in.

As for the two resistors, these are the cathode bias resistors for the power tubes. He used a seperate cap/resistor for each pair of El84s.

Dear Dana

Thanks for the reply. The tape and bits of wood are a bit of a worry, as you'd think there would be a better option. What if the tape or bit of wood came loose, I also wondered if the coating on the transformer laminations were damaged by wedging in the piece of dowel, where I live this would lead to the transformer rusting.

(I usually give the transformers in my amps a coat of Humiseal, it stops rust dead in it's track.)

Dana, as you'd know I would like to see your efforts with the Rocket, I'm sure it will sound great. I just gotten married in the last three weeks, and the wife isn't too keen about having a Marshall 2210 disassembled in the lounge room.

There has been much cleaning and it seems I will have to take up residence in my garage.
Yours Sincerely

Well congrats to the newly weds !! I'll keep ya posted on the Rocket build. Sounds like we are both going through a change in our personal life. I had a heart attack 3 weeks ago and am just now getting back into the swing of things. Richie just had carpel tunnel surgery today and will not be playing guitar for a few weeks. :(

I am moving back to the basement where it is cool during the summer and I hope your garage has heat (if you need it) as you're heading into fall.

The wood dowels are really kind of wierd but I'm not kidding when I say that those stock Hammond chassis' that Ken used were very flimsy and this must have been something he came up with to reinforce the trannys and keep them from denting in the chassis.

Dear Dana

I am very sorry to hear of your heart attack, that is terrible.

I hope Richie is okay after his operation. I've had my hands get sore from working too much and playing guitar, but I have been able to have it massaged out and I now do stretches which help. Naturally I wish Richie all the best with his operation and hope he has a speedy recovery.
Yours Sincerely

If you go onto Ebay, and type (or paste) the item numbers quoted further up this thread (300104820807 and 300104877338) into the search window, you'll get the right pages, with the pics. I just checked, and the pages still work fine.

I had a feeling these wouldn't go at that price. Wonderful as they are, $35K is a heck of a lot of money. Wealthy, obsessed collector types only, I'd think. Lottery winners maybe... Beyond my means, that's for sure.
