How to switch between tube recto and SS?
I apologize if this has been talked about to death already but I can't find any layouts or schematics to get my brain wrapped around how to do this.
I thought I had saved some info but could find it.

I found this one in my files.

Hi Mark, I came up with this idea recently. The silicon backs-up the vacuum rectifier in vacuum mode, and the vacuum rectifier's filament is turned off in silicon mode.

That will probably work. Mesa switches it on the AC side which would be easier on the switch and most likely less popping. I've never tried either one though.

Here's one if you want to keep DC off the switch.

I posted while Martin was posting--Martin's way would be even better on the switch--it would only be switching the difference in voltage from a tube to a SS rectifier (30 volts or so?).

Re: How to switch between tube recto and SS?
The switch is only seeing the vacuum rectifier tube voltage drop- except when the vacuum rectifier is cold. It could be started in vacuum mode, or you could leave the filament switching out. I guess if you switch it with the standby open (as drawn with the reservoir after the standby, and you'd want to do that anyway) the rectifier switch sees no voltage... The standby takes all the DC. I see no reason to waste the 2 or 3 amps for the vacuum rectifier filament when you're using it in ss mode.

Re: How to switch between tube recto and SS?
All very good and serious ideas.
.... but if I were you..
I just run each out to it's own wall switch and those switches are tied by bailing wire up and down to an old Ernie Ball volume pedal on both ends, I flipped the switch for the SS upside down and installed pulleys above and below the switches in the ceiling and floor.
I used to have a long tube with a mouse wearing a 10oz vest. You step on the pedal and it would dump a little mouse treat, the mouse would smell it and run down the tube to where the treat was in a little cup and that cup was attached to the tube recto wall switch but I didn't have enough mouse tube for the SS side and the other mouse escaped one night.. so it was blowing fuses and I lost a couple recto tubes and it was always a very slow switch because mice can smell treats but they are fairly wary of predation.
I had an idea for another version that was a cat actuated mouse drive bi-directional wall switching rectifier cup tunnel, kind of stumbled on it when I noticed it didn't switch for a minute and then I noticed my friend's cat was pawing at the treat cup end of the mouse tube. i am pretty sure it could be done with one mouse, but you'd have to use parallel cats or it would switch way too slow.
Mice might be cute in litte weighted vests doing tricks for treats, but mice are afraid. Just keep that in mind when you are using them in switching circuits.
Cat to positve, mouse to ground, always.

Thanks for the great ideas.
Miles quit clowning around here I'm in a serious mode
Under paid mice! I once started a government union for mice since every one was trying to kill the vertically challenged bastards. National Federation of Mice Equality (NFME)
I also started another union (FUFE) the Fucked Up Federal Employees for which I was the president. Before I retired I got an email from IT wondering if it was okay to get rid of my FUFE group mail account

I hope you told them no.
If you don't like mice I have an idea for just one cat, but it's really high voltage and if the cat touches the ground it makes a popping noise that you can't stop with a big resistor.

I've had bad experiences with cats in the human anatomy lab in college.

Seriously guys - the only reliable application for mice is the mouse organ.
Larger rodents & felines are much more appropriate.
And remember - red to red, black to black & blue to fuck.
Just my 1c worth.

Okay, really serously, I guess if you put the reservoir before the standby then there would likely be voltage on both sides of the switch... I think I like that way better.

No no! the plate leads go to the ears! Cats make lousy rectifiers anyway... PIV is too low.
