Fender Tone Stacks Mid control vs None
I was thinking about adding a mids control to my pro reverb and I found this on the gear page.
http://www.thegearpage.net/board/showth ... 750&page=2
scroll down to the graphs. it's basically saying that if you have your bass and treble at the same number turning them up will cause the mids to basically be scooped--- like treble on 10 and bass on 10 your mids will be much more scooped than if you have treble on 3 and bass on 3.
Is this true? I was under the impression that it was all about the difference between the two knobs and treble 3 bass 3 was the same sound as both knobs on 10... and 10 was just louder. I tried subbing a 15k resistor to ground for the fixed mids in my pro and the amp sounds much different to me.

Hmmm omfg. I see.
Yeah, more one thing is less everything else.
Gear page.... Gear page.. I totally get it now, thanks!

Re: Fender Tone Stacks Mid control vs None
Your Pro Reverb already has a mid control - it just has a fixed value and no knob. You can either bring it out to a knob or change the mid resistor to a trimmer (try 25k).caveing wrote:I was thinking about adding a mids control to my pro reverb and I found this on the gear page.

Re: Fender Tone Stacks Mid control vs None
yeh i've just been looking into the tone stack calculator. pretty cool.
so this is wideley regarded as correct then?
because i've always heard differently and thought differently from my own hearing. that a fender didnt really act like the way he's talking about... ie: the whole treble bass on 10 and 10 versus 1 and 1. but now i'm seeing that there are differences in the shape of the curve that he's saying we can't hear.

and... it's a windows program... i have a stupid mac...
can anyone just answer the question for me? I like to run bass on 0-1 and treble on 9-10 on my fender, i was thinking i could dial up the upper bass with the mids knob to get the kind of spanky bass i like on fenders.
i also have .022uf and .022uf on the tone caps

Re: Fender Tone Stacks Mid control vs None
there should be a resistor going off the bass pot ( value 6.7k ) you can disconect that resistor and add a 50k pot to hear if you like a mid controll or not. I added it to my bassman head and love it. you'll be surprised how much the sound will change if you max out the mid pot (more marshall and dirt) see if you like it or not.
Re: Fender Tone Stacks Mid control vs None
hardly, the mid control adds not only mids but also bass, including low basscaveing wrote:and... it's a windows program... i have a stupid mac...

Re: Fender Tone Stacks Mid control vs None
It's true that less treble and less bass is the same as less "scooped." However, if you also want more distortion potential, it's better to add mids than to subtract the rest. I have a push-pull volume control on my DR that switches the mids from the stock "7" to "19" via an additional resistor.
Bass and Treble are on "5" in the capture.

Re: Fender Tone Stacks Mid control vs None
Wouldn't 50k be a little excessive? I'm thinking about doing the dumble mod for my normal channel and using vibrato as clean still.
Re: Fender Tone Stacks Mid control vs None
Yes - 25k is good. 50k can swamp the rest.caveing wrote:Wouldn't 50k be a little excessive? I'm thinking about doing the dumble mod for my normal channel and using vibrato as clean still.
Re: Fender Tone Stacks Mid control vs None
yea 50k is but, that was the point, to push it. Just clip the one end of the resistor and temporarily hook up a pot to see what you like.caveing wrote:Wouldn't 50k be a little excessive? I'm thinking about doing the dumble mod for my normal channel and using vibrato as clean still.
still confused on the basics
I see how it would be easier to dial in different sounds with the mids control... but is this guy correct on the gear page saying you can basically get the same sounds with bass and treble as you can with the mids pot. just volume differences?
Or is he wrong? I see the difference in the curves, but tehy are somewhat minor. And I realize that increasing the volume is gonna help. the stock mids value is 10k log in a fender amp with a mids control. so wouldnt a twin have a lot less mids than any of the two knob fender amps unless you put the mids knob above like 8? interesting idea there... I'd like to be able to fine tune my scooped fender tone, would audio really be better than linear?
Also-- I've been checking out that "Blue guitar- Cool mod for fender twin...
anyone try this? I've been looking for sound clips but cant find anything. Maybe some other options for a normal channel mod? I am so much more impressed with my vibrato channel's tone at this point- i feel like it's the extra gain stage, but i do have .022uf tone caps and some different coupling caps... nothing major though- it just sounds so much fatter. I dont remember that big of a difference before...
So i'd like to make my normal channel more useful. I have a bunch of amp in box pedals I've built and tweaked to my liking, so those are fun for rocking... They sound best when the amp is at its cleanest though, for sure. Is this "cool mod" a kind of clean jazzy preamp (as it looks like it would be to me).
I do have a pro reverb- so I'm wondering if I'd be better off going to a tweed channel kinda of mod- since it has the smaller transformers and more sag with the 5u4 (silverface pro) rectifier.
Any thoughts?

Re: Fender Tone Stacks Mid control vs None
forgive me, but also... i was just looking at how a twin reverb layout has the mids control wired versus wiring a variable resistor off the bass pot in a two knob eq fender. it looks like it would sound quite a bit different... i dont know, maybe they would work the same.
anyone else see what i'm saying?

Re: Fender Tone Stacks Mid control vs None
??? In a Twin Reverb, the mid pot IS wired as a variable resistor off the bass pot. Tweeds and Marshalls are a little different.caveing wrote:i was just looking at how a twin reverb layout has the mids control wired versus wiring a variable resistor off the bass pot
