*New Build Thread* 2nd Gen Hybrid 50w footswitchable FET

Post by amplifiednation »

Here we go again!!

I am pumped up for this build...my second full ODS.

I am using J Borders "2nd Gen Hybrid" layout, which is a 100w 6L6 build, with footswitchable PAB/FET/OD.

The FET will have an externally mounted pot for gain.

I'm doing a 50w so I knocked the main filtering down to 50uf
CE chassis/Jason's board sets
1964 Bassman OT
Still undecided on the PT

I have a NOS pair of Philips 7581A which I want to use.

I am running a bit low on some colors of Teflon, so my color scheme may not be accurate...but as long as I can understand it, is all that matters!!

This should be fun. I'm going to replace the MF 1w resistors on the board with 2w, they should be here today and it's raining so I hope to start laying down some solder!! I need some other parts for the boards.

Got my hardware mounted and will start with the perimeter wiring first, solder up the boards

Hi Taylor, looking good there.
I am going to do a similar 50w build soon, but in a silver CE chassis when they do the next batch.
Jborders boards too, I am hopefully going to use a salvaged 50w PT I have had for many years, dunno what OT yet.

I like the look of this 2nd gen hybrid, could you get some "feedback city" going with one of these? I was planning a 183/102 hybrid to try for some of that "Talbany gold" :)

I will be contacting you for some covering goodies for sure, thinking a 1-12 combo with black suede and diamond cloth. Can't wait to get going on this baby.
Keep us informed of your build.
Thanks
Rog

My last build was the 102 in a silver CE chassis!! It feedbacks like crazy, but not quite like Tony's amp. I dont think these earlier gens have quite as much gain as the 102/183, but I'm sure with the switchable FET it will give up the goods. Lance Keltner has a youtube video with his Bludo of a similar design and it just ROARS. Much different that the jazzy open tones of the 102.

Here's that video:

Taylor,

I highly suggest going to Marco Electronics to get some NOS resistors. They will make your build sound better by 10 fold.

The build looks great so far though man!

Looking great Taylor
the"J Borders 2nd Gen Hybrid layout" is cool
I use the FET on a relay with a pot and really like it.
Keep us posted

+1 on markoparts! (Mark Huffman) He has Electra and Mepco-Electra metal films which are historically correct for 2nd gen. They sound different than the Dales, smoother. You only really need these on the plates and cathodes, although HAD sometimes used them on the PI plates and grid bias too IIRC.

The other resistors should normally be carbon film. I like Pihers, getting expensive, especially 100K and 220K.

Mark's advertized items are like the tip of an iceberg, he has much much more stuff, all NOS, not showing!. I got a lot of '60s/'70s german carbon films, mostly Draloric with some Resista, from him recently. He has no Pihers unfortunately.

My winter amp was almost the same build. Very versatile -- although I have more modern resistors in there. This is the oldest in the lineage I've built and the only one that doesn't have to have a Dumbleator. The FET is a little noisy, though so it is probably time to to a little tweaking when it gets back from a friend who is airing it out live a lot. sh

Well guys, I might have to swap out some resistors! I took a look last night at that site, I'll get some new plates and cathodes this week. Maybe I'll stock up, I had no idea there was a source avaiable!

I got some of the 2w Koa Speers CF's for the power tube grids, but they didn't have many values in 2W at mouser.

I got the main board done last night and did some wiring today. This is going to come together nicely. I saw Structo did a relay stack in his ODS, I'll probably do the same and stack the FET relay. I'll post a pic of the board later tonight if I can sneak into the shop!

Taylor,

You might be better off putting the FET relay board on the side wall where the FET board is (closer to the input jack like on Jborders layout), just because you might have problems with Proximity noise when the FET Relay is ON.

I believe Tom (Structo) stacked relay was a bright on clean only relay.

Not sure if this will help
this is where I put mine...no noise

Awesome. I'll throw the relay on the side, I didn't know about the FET noise.

Here's the pre board. I'll swap some parts out for NOS, as recommended.

I'm also building the J Borders "2nd Gen Hybrid" and every time I do work on it I end up with another Mouser order. Just ordered some caps and resistors 3m3, 4m7 and 22m yesterday.

I should soon be stocked with Dumble value components. :)

    Looking good Taylor.

When you get it done I know a guy that builds some great looking cabinets.

    Dangit you guys
I was gonna take a build break...now I gotta do one of these too
I have a 4 hole chassis, wondering if I should reverb it or loop it.
Someone was saying the 2nd/3rd gen was good without tube loop.
    Can anyone comment?

    D-
The 2nd gen layout in the files section only has preamp out, no power amp in...so I guess that's good for a wet/dry rig? I'm not sure...I really like reverb and the Dumbleator adds so much to the tone, I can't see why you wouldn't at least make the passive loop back into the amp.

Jason's layout is cool, as it gives a really nice way to get the 2nd gen into a CE chassis and using his board sets, which I've got a few of. I'm still pondering the high value 2000pf ceramic, and also thinking I may pull the NTE brown poly caps for 6PS. I don't know if I want those so early in the signal path/tone stack. Thoughts???

Here's some other pics, footswitch wiring, got some power tube stuff done. My boards are 100% complete. I'll get some pics of those up soon too. Well, the FET still needs some work.

Are you guys drilling an extra hole for the tag strip that the 7805 mounts to? I can just mount the 7805 to the chassis with thermal grease, right? Or do i need a true "transistor mounting kit" from Shack?
