these are high gain amplifiers ....think as the volume as a gain control and use your guitars volume to control the beast

Re: liver pool gain too hot
Yes you need to back the guitar down with an Express or Liverpool for cleans. Reducing the gain with 12AU7 and or 12AT7 is another easy option however the amp's overall EQ will also be altered and the singing gain will be compromised. Check out my Youtube video "Trainwreck amp tech talk" for more detail on working with such high gain from the guitar knobs. Also check the volume pot in the amp to see what taper you have as all audio tapers are not the same. On my '85 Express the 1meg volume pot is at a mere 100k at half rotation. This is one of the details that make a wreck more user friendly. Same goes for the pots in the guitar, as pots with a gradual taper are very important especially when paired with these amps. If all else fails build a Rocket and go with pedals to boost it for leads.

Also known as a split plate load resistor, this is a great way to turn a beast into an amp you may prefer. And it can be tuned to your liking by shifting the balance of he resistors too.
I also love 12AT7's in my Express, so I imagine they will work well in a Pool too. Try them in V3 and/or V1.
liver pool
will a 33k resistor help on the shielded input jack run instead of the 15 k
Re: liver
If you are getting sound (and lots of it) when your guitar volume is off, something is wrong with the guitar pot or wiring.harris51 wrote:actually the guitar volume is off and when I crack the gain on the amp even a hair it's like it's dimed
liver pool
I using a 1 meg 53c3 clarostat 105a if that helps anybody know of a better one?

I apologize if this sounds harsh, I don't mean it that way. But unless you can be more descriptive, noone will be able to help you.
If you don't have a guitar plugged in, and you turn the amp up, you would have no way of knowing how gainy or distorted the amp is. All you would know is how noisy it is. Maybe that is what you are actually asking about? Noise?
Please tell us EXACTLY what you are doing, and what you are hearing, and what bothers you about it.

OK, now we are getting somewhere
We thought you were saying that the amount of gain and distortion was more than you liked when you played through the amp. So ignore all previous answers.
Now, let's talk about noise.
Is there a lot of hum, or hiss, or both?
When you say "without your guitar plugged in", do you mean that there is no cable attached to the input jack on the amp, or is the cable connected to the amp, but just not to the guitar on the other end?
