Yeah! I had a II, IIe, and a IIc+ back in the day. Remember the Apple III Lisa? That one sure tanked.
11 years old. Imagine trying to run your 11 year old Mac.
My EE/FIL actually has a working Quadra! 1994.

Anyway, I feel your pain Miles. Hope you get it sorted out.

Yeah, it's sorted out. I am airman 3rd class in my flying game instead of general, and all my amp notes are history.

I am too numb to feel any pain losing data, I just want it to hurt the team leader on the ipad program. I wish there was an app for that. The guy is a moron. Do they use this stuff before they sell it anymore? I don't think so.

:)

All smiles.

This lot is going to the next hazardous waste drop-off day:

2 @ SE30's

Beige G3

Beige G3 upgraded with G4 ZIF

Performa 6200

MDD Dual 1.25

Apple II dot-matrix printer

HP 5c laser printer

TI micro35 laser printer

It's going to be painful, but I no longer have storage space for obsolete equipment.

Wow Nick, that's quite a collection! Too bad it doesn't have some Old Stock/Collector value for eBay. But best to e-cycle it all.

I actually considered whether I could use the power supplies for tube amps ..... when suddenly it dawned on me what a daft idea it was. Oh well, it illustrates how deep this amp-building obsession runs.

I won't join in the holy war here... but I often get on my soap box about data backup at work and at family gatherings.

Here's the thing. Backups are like a helmet. You always want to wear one, but you never want to use it. And test, test, test your backups.

I often say, on my soap box, that there will be MANY adults and children who will say "I don't have pictures from XX years because my Dad's hard drive crashed". Well, you really don't have pictures because your dad was negligent with data.

For my VERY important data. I am currently using Dropbox (100gb plan). Not only does it backup data to the cloud, but their mobile app is first class especially for pictures. It's not large enough for everything, but the vitals are on there..

I've also heard excellent first-hand reviews for www.crashplan.com - 50 bucks unlimited plan and includes a mobile app. I'll likely sign up for this just as a "belt and suspenders" approach. Just to back up all the ancillary files.

Sorry I'm not more sympathetic. It's just that you really gotta own your data... and not trust anyone but yourself to do those backups.

I agree with owning your data. I also agree with doing it yourself. The cloud doesn't qualify in my book. There will be people saying I don't have pictures...they got lost in the cloud. Just sayin.

I had backups. This is about a big hole in how ipads are backed up. Poor software. They are not paying attention, and they won't deny the problem, they just ignore it, and the user.

It's a bother. :)

Imma power user. Certified in many things IT. This is garbage.

It's not the only software problem with the ipad line, trust me. Try to delete anything from your ipad then sync with itunes. Ok, nowmdelete it again, andthis time delete it in itunes too. Now sync. Ok, now delete it again, and halt the download on itunes, then delete it again, and sync then delete it again and delete it again and sync and delete it again nowmsync and then synclete it degain then s..

The cloud is OK... I mean it's just an off-site backup. Google Docs, Amazon S3, Windows SkyDrive, CrashPlan.

I'm a bit of a traditionalist on backups. At work, I rely on tapes and Iron Mountain. I run a full backup everyday and send them off-site every week. I just recently restored 80GB of pictures from a tape set I made 2 years ago and it worked perfectly (and I am most thankful!). So I've got my daily rotation of tapes, Windows Shadow Copy files, NAS volume level snapshots, etc. Servers in a controlled, locked environment.. Plenty of protection. But the home users, at best, have a portable hard drive (which typically fail with 2 years or less of use) and a high speed internet connection to use for backups. DVD's too, maybe... but they're getting to be too small, or data is growing to wildly, to be useful.

It'd be prudent to consider the following:

1. How to I protect my data from corruption or hardware failure? This can include file level corruption, virus corruption, hardware corruption, and a variety of other sources.

2. How do I protect my data from the external environment? House fire, flood, theft, etc.

3. Have I taken a recent inventory of my important data? PDA's and phones included. Can I live with a clean OS install and only your data restored? Or do I need to backup your system as an image for a complete bare metal restore? How much pain can I tolerate? I typically don't count things that can be recreated or re-downloaded as data, but your inventory might count that as data (program files, mp3 files, etc).

Answer those questions and a backup solution starts to develop....

I personally recommend a blend of local and cloud backups. That's what I do (I'm a full system backup right now just because I'm talking about it). Ultimatley, it's important to have both a local and an off-site backup. Cloud, IMNSHO, works just fine so long as it's tested at least quarterly for restorability and check logs frequently. Plug PDA's in on occasion and copy data to a folder included in your regular backup routine.

2 types of backups from Apple that I know about. iTunes or iCloud. Typically, free iCloud accounts aren't large enough to backup iPads/iPhones, unless you add cash. So people tweak them to remove unnecessary items from their iCloud backups so they'll fit. Not sure what happened in your particular case, what app you were using for your documents, and what types of backups you were using. I'm just saying that if you have data you can't live without, you can't trust any company to automagically back things up in the event of failure. In your case with the iPad crash.

On my iPad, I use Dropbox for all my documents. I don't think I have anything outside of dropbox, except the camera photos, that I couldn't live without.

I do understand your frustration with Apple. I really get frustrated by them also, for other reasons. But a good many people really like the 'ease' of use and the polished look and feel of their device OS compared to android. Someday soon, hardware will reach a point where they'll have to decide if iOS is it, or OSX is it and unify their operating systems. Then... more pain and frustration....

My MacBook Pro is an i5 yada yada. The only reason I bought it was that I got tired of the Hewlett Packard screw job. It's now been amortized out to about $120 a month. I'll hang on for a while longer but I'll be back with some kind of PC eventually.

The whole Apple graphics superiority legend is pure horsefeathers. Corel dropped them finally. Now you got one choice in a vector graphics program; adobe illustrator. All those pretty cartoons we have on here cannot be done on a mac without an investment into software equal to or greater than the cost of the computer.

Screw Apple and their horse.

Something good comes of almost everything.

Bobsled. Turned my ipad2 into a telephone. It's a really good app, and very useful for wifi calling. (and free without ads, at least for now)

Anyone remember dialpad? lol International internet calls over 56k.

Yes, and I tasted both PT taps. The 460v tap tastes brighter than the 390.
