Replacement Pot for CryBaby

Post by dobbhill »

Help please! I need to replace the pot on my recently inherited Cry-Baby: Thomas Organ model 95-910511
It appears to have the TDK 5103 inductor.

I would appreciate guidance finding the appropriate pot for this unit. Please share your good (and bad) experience.

thanks much in advance!

I don't think that was the stack of dimes fasel inductor????

If you really like that sound, I read the new pots will work in that pedal. I bought one at a pawn shop (Thomas Organ Cry Baby) and I did like the pedal, but I liked the Morley wah better. So I sold it at a tidy profit on eBay... those things are fairly collectable! Swapping parts will likely only detract from the value...

what's wrong with the pot?

I had a Crybaby Classic that the pot got scratchy after just a few months and I didn't use it that much.

So I bought some fancy pot for $22 and it went noisy in short order too.

Later I bought a Ernie Ball Wah, you know with the string and pulley?

Works great, a little different wah sound but good enough and very quiet.
Andy Timmon's turned me on to it.

I have a duty to share this because so many people have this same wah problem:

I have an original Wah made by the Thomas Organ Co. my model number is 95-910511 serial 2029577.

As is very common I had a scratchy sound when operating it. Replaced the pot, no dice, in short I replaced every component on the board including the jacks, no dice!

Fortunately I had installed an LED so I could tell when the pedal was on, and a switch to turn it off and save my battery.

One day while I was operating the pedal, I noticed that the LED was blinking in unison with the scratchy sound, the moment it scratched, the LED would go off. That was my clue, its operating voltage related, so I proceeded to change batteries, etc., still, no dice. But, there was one one lonely part that I had not changed, the battery clip! My battery clip was the original made of folded cardboard, I sliced it open and there it was, the negative contact was corroded (it looked fine on the battery contact side) . Replaced the clip with a hard plastic clip from Small Bear, it's been about 6 or 7 years and it's running clean. BTW, I reinstalled all it's original components.

Check out this fresh picture, I keep the old clip around because it was my first electronic troubleshoot/repair ever.

Cheers.
