Maybe try what some folks call "megaplex" where you change the OD "HRM" tonestack from the plate to a cathode follower type. First things first though- spend some time dialing in the HRM trimmers and the rest of the amp as is (OD trimmer, phase balance, bias, etc.).

Ah, so that's the "megaplex" voicing. Had wondered. Forgive me guys, as I don't have an EE degree (which is why I'm here. You guys rock), but is this something that could be added to the board as a select-able option? In other words, could I have a toggle switch installed that would switch between plate and cathode followers, or do I just look like a total NOOB right now?ER wrote:Maybe try what some folks call "megaplex" where you change the OD "HRM" tonestack from the plate to a cathode follower type. In the sense that I think you're defining the question, the answer is no.could I have a toggle switch installed that would switch between plate and cathode followers

Mine's smooth too but what did Scott do to yours?Bob-I wrote:That statement confuses me, my BM is very smooth after Scott L did some tweaking.talbany wrote:If a smooth singing OD tone was what you were after why did you go with a BM..![]()

Here are some things that for me make the BM a fuzzier amp than other generations
First and foremost is the PI..
The 10k tail and 470 ohm cathode is a much gainer type with lower headroom and gives you more of that grittier PI distortion artifacts.. Couple this with the Marshall style presence that has less GNFB is also more in your face crunch.. Also the tone stack on the BM also has less losses than the Skyliner..If you use the megaboost lift the stack style PAB your lifting everything including the bass frequency's which doesn't help at all with the smoothness factor either
If your using 34's in the BM output section these too can give a kind of hair to the top end vs 6L's which have a more rounded top end
For those who think they are smooth amps by comparison bring it on over and we'll A/B it with my 102 variant..
You have to be very careful when getting these kits!!...These amps should be assembled by someone with real amp building experience since lead dress plays a critical role the fuzz/fizz factor especially in a BM design

talbany-
what are the spots in particular where lead dress has the biggest effect on tone in a D style amp?
