Having read with interest an number of people after a particular tone, sound etc and building a amp to achieve that sound has made me wonder what people think contributes to tone.
From a personal perspective i tend to sound pretty much the same on any amp as a rule, i certainly dial in my own sound on any amp i own, currently i use a Mesa dc5 and a Dumble ods clone , diffenrt amps but my band mates cant really tell the differnce betwen amps

Re: Tone
The old question. What is tone?
I must admit that I have never quite understood the "tone" discussions and the quest. So a fat load of help I am.
My band members call me Tone, but that is just a lazy-London way of saying Tony.
I can very much relate to how different amps feel and how they respond to what I am asking from them WRT the needs of the song. I like a simple direct circuit, preferably with no tone control!
Have a fine Easter,
best, tony

Re: Tone
After chasing "my" tone for nearly 35 years, I will say tone = the total system. A summation of everything. Not just an amp or guitar individually, but all of the equipment working together as a whole including the room and any studio equipment.
I will also say that good tone comes very easy to some with minimal gear, Bugs Henderson wrote a great song, Four Tens Strike again, which seems to be so true.

Re: Tone
'tis a sick and compulsive quest for sure.
I've recently started really digging the Fender Bass VI tone on the bridge p'up with a reverb unit, blonde bassman and a 15" JBL.
But then again I also love a strat and a 5G9 (and a reverb unit). If you stick a hotcake in front, it totally rocks.
A Jazzie with a BFPR going through a 12" speaker is pretty awesome.
And then again, a strat with a rangemaster treble boost and a BFDR is an awesome blues combination.
A LP through a JTM45 with a couple of Greenback G12s is just awesum.
Where's it gonna end?
