How close is this amp to a real Jose modded marshall and can this amp achieve the early VH1 sound.

#1) EVH never used an amp that was modded by Jose. Jose added one very small part to his amp and kept him tubed. Nothing like the mods he sold to everyone really. Framptons tone is more of a typical Jose.
#2) I have seen at least 15~20 Jose amps and no two have really been the same. Including the one he did for me. Kind of like Dumble in that respect. They do follow a pattern though.
#3) Not really a great amp mod you should think about chasing IMO.
If you want an Ed tone it is really more simple stock plexi with some tweaks

Eds plexi was modified,I have old studio photos from the recording of Van halen II and you can see a pot in back of Eds plexi.After listening to that clip(listed above) which sounds good it just lacks the crunch/edge that you hear on van halen 1 first album tone.Ive tried numerous late 60s plexi's and none had that type of sound.

Not being critical and i don,t want to offend anyone but why try to get someone elses tone, i like to mod amps to get where i want to be and although i may have in fluences my tone is my own,as i said its not a critism just a genuine question.

On any professional recording, there is always a lot more going on than just the guitar amp. The microphone, mic placement, mic pre-amp and dozens of other things go into the final sound that you hear on the record.

Just sticking an SM57 in front of you amp and running through the board with someone who really knows how to dial it in will bring out more of an edge and make even a small amp sound powerful.

Jimmy Page made a Telecaster and a little Supro sound enormous in the studio.

Very true,but with the technology today there are tube amp out there that can achieve that sound.One amp in mind is the Fryette Deliverance,with the correct guitar,pickup,strings,effects,speakers(celestion greenbacks 25 watt) and especially reverb.

I'm not drawn by the EVH mystique. I heard clips of the amp and was very impressed with the tone.

Marshall amps in general.Ive been at this over 35 years tried many late 60s plexi's and 70s superleads and none at full volume had that type of tone that van halen had.Ive also have tried them on a variac lowering the voltage and still didnt have that type of tone.

There's more to that EVH tone than just the amp--it is a plexi driving a dummy load--that is tapped for a signal to run to a delay and another power amp. Then add Ted Templeton ? in the control room performing some magic on it. There is probably more to it than that but that is what I recall reading. The bottom line is, there is a lot more than just an guitar plugged into an amp to get that tone.

The phase 90 is not going to drive(add gain) a amp its just for coloration.
