Premature evaluation.

Post by LeftyStrat »

Maybe five or ten years from now it would be worth this price. But I'm pretty sure I could build an exact copy for under a grand:

How do you seriously put an amp auction for $9k and only type two sentences about it? That's all you have to say? Good luck with that one. I would probably try to convince you to spend the money!!!

I know, I know, you probably "already know" if you are looking at... just seems a little effort could have put forth of you really have that amp!!

It's an ad. He knows it won't sell but he's trying to artificially inflate the value and/or hopes that someone will PM him with a high (but not $9k high) offer. Heck occasionally someone even forks over the dough these guys are asking for.

People like this have not only ruined ebay but have helped push the prices of boutique and vintage equipment through the roof. There isn't really anything you can do to stop them other than ignoring their auctions.

Do I ?, Do i really ?

I'd bet there's only a minority of guitar playerds* out there who honestly have an appreciation of amps like that.
By definition, an amp that's truly rare is not going to be well known.

I won't go near ebay any more, except occasionally for a laugh, like this ad. Scammers heaven.

Another reason for the price is insurance. If you can prove that is the going rate, then you can insure the item for that value.

Vintage gear is currently the lowest it has been since the 90's. in '08 you couldn't find half of this stuff and if you could, best of luck getting anyone to sell it. Now it's easy to buy and barter.

I have a feeling this Komet's owner might be a new owner of a JM built TW. The price is probably to off set the TW. The Komet is a limited run, however it's at most a $4500-$5500 amp, with a very realistic selling price in $3800 range. Since by small build standards Komet is a mass production company, who are still in business.. This amp model has no holy grail players currently endorsing it, or tone freaks chasing for that amp as a must have, coupled with JM building new production Trainwreck amplifiers, unless something amazing happens (like two Komet fans get into a bidding war), it's never going to be more then a cool used amp.

Years ago, there was another eBay listing offering a "heavily modified" Fender Princeton, that said basically "if you know what this is, you know what it's worth." It was one of Randall Smith's originals. I don't remember how that auction turned out, but the Komet's are not yet in even Randall Smith territory.

I found one recently (a Princeton Boogie), made a "best offer" and got it for less than half the "buy it now".
I paid about what I would have for any other fixer-upper 1965 Princeton.
