A couple good used Power Transformers, build ideas?

Post by bastardbus »

I picked up a couple good working vintage power transformers recently in hi-fi type amps. I was pondering what builds they might be good for, any recommendations?

The limitations will come from either the 6.3v or HT windings.
The two 720V 110 or 120mA are probably good for a pair of 6V6 and your choice of preamp circuit. With a 5Y3GT, plate voltage will be around 390-400. It will be higher with 5U4 or solid state rectifier. You don't have enough mA for 6L6 or EL34. Plate voltage is too high for EL84. 3.5A is enough for most of what I'm describing for filaments. 5.2A will support the filament requirements of 6L6's but the 110mA limit is killing that idea.

545v 58mA is probably good for a single ended 6V6 With solid state rectification, expect around 380V. With a 5Y3GT expect around 300V so you might consider EL84 at the lower voltage.

2A is good for 5Y3GT. You need 3A for 5U4.

Thanks Phil, that is exactly what I was looking for. I have built a 5E3 already and have a `55 oahu which is a single ended 6V6 like a tweed princeton or champ. So, I was hoping to be able to do something different the another 6V6 amp. I was crossing my fingers I could squeeze out a JTM45 but as you said I just did not see the available current there. Seems most of those run around 200ma but thought I would ask on here as sometimes folks run those PTs bigger then need be.
Thought maybe something with EL84s as but too much voltage you say.

It makes sense, all 3 of these PTs where from a push pull 6V6 based amp, the smaller a straight phono and the larger ones also powered a radio-tuner as well. I like 6V6 amps but seem to have enough of those right now. Thanks

These will fetch $25+/- each on eBay with a BIN. Maybe more for the two 720's. They are good for the 5E3/6V6-based-18W crowd. Take what you get and buy one good PT that you want. For what you get, you can probably turn it round to get a 640-680V with ~200ma that you'll want for the JTM45. It will take some patience, but they become available for a good price now and then.

The small one is going to be great for a pair of EL95's in push pull. You owe yourself a look. This tube sell on eBait for cheap. This is your ticket to a 6V6 sound with a whole lot less volume.

Check for old organ chassis on ebay. The output tubes are usually worn out but the iron is generally good. You can find the kind of setup you want. Ask the seller to check if the fuse is good.

Looks like this PT would be good for a deluxe reverb, do ya think?

Yes. Expect voltages to be a little on the high side. The specs probably assume 115 or 117v primary supply. Today, we often see 120v or more. You may or may not want to tweak the supply ladder to get the preamp voltages in line. Power tubes should be OK.
