Bassman 20 donor?

Post by benoit »

Hi, I've got a Fender Bassman 20 combo that I picked up for 200 bucks. The clean is ok, but I'd like something a little more versitile. I eventually want to build an open back 1x12 or 2x12 rather than the closed 1x15 its in right now. Is there a variant of the ODS that would work well if I used it as a donor? Preferably less than 50 watt? The chassis is 14 1/2 by 5 3/4 inches and is about 1 5/8 inches deep. Front face has Vol, T, M, B, and on/off switch, back has hum balance pot, speaker out, line out, fuse, plus an extra hole in the chassis that didn't get used for anything. It's in pretty good shape so I'd feel a little bad scrapping it but not if it was to build something a lot cooler.

I'll provide the gentle nudge....Gut it and Build a Norms 6v6 clone! Leave out the reverb if you don't have room.

I'm definitely in on the 6v6 D-Lite but here's a follow-up question: if what I really want is an open-back 2x12 or 1x12, would it really be worth it to use the bassman combo w/ closed back 1x15 as a donor? Esp since I probably can't just mod the chassis (not enough space for the knobs I want to add, even sans reverb)?

I think I'd rather keep the bassman in-tact (maybe tweak it a bit tho), build a head version of the d-lite, and get/build a 2x12 cab when I got the cash. Thoughts?
