Correct value for 60's AC30 extension cabinet?

Post by Dingleberry »

Hi.

I have an original 60's AC30 extension cabinet in sight.
It's closed back 2x12" with AC30 cosmetics and dimensions.
Loaded with "some celestions", the seller didn't know exactly.

What is the correct value for those cabinets?
The seller didn't know what to ask and I didn't know what to offer.

With alnico blues or silvers or with greenbacks?

Tried googling, but nothing special I found, in fact not much info at all about those cabinets. Only some repro cabs and new market made in china cabs...

Are those vintage cabs rare and do they have a good sound?

Rare? Ehh not so much. 2x12 could be for any model, and were. Cab is no more rare than the amp.

The cab should be 8 or 16 ohms. They came both ways, but you have a speaker swap, and I am seeing it probable that you find it's probably 8ohms right now.

Should be a cool player if the price is right. Unless it is minty, don't fall in love with it for a price.

It's going to totally come down to cosmetics and if it has the metal rack it mounts on.

If it's tolex or grill cloth are bunked up it's $ Hundred off because it's not something you can replace easily. The New production "VOX" correct cloth is not OEM to vintage.

If the speakers are not OEM again $ Hundred off - after all the point of the cabinet is the speakers. The cabinet was designed for a certain speaker.

Any parts missing, hardware, handles, panels. etc...

2x12 cabinets are not rare they just aren't highly sought after. The high dollar Vox amps (AC30, AC15, AC30TB) all come with speakers. the head version of the later AC30 is thousands less then the combo.
The super beatle comes with a matched cabinet and stand.

In most cases the extension cabinets were intended to be used with the later solid state amps.
From my personal experience the cabinets sound OK if you like the look then they do the job. However they are not my automatic go to speaker cabinet.

100% OEM clean, functional - $650 - ($800 if loaded with Bulldogs dated '61-66)
beat but with OEM speaker - $400
replaced speakers. - $250-300 - or 25% of speakers cost which ever is less.
Multiple issues - $100
