Ceriatone OTS 50w Help! Two Rock MODS?

Post by nudefish11 »

Hi There

I am new to the forum and I am wondering if it is possible to MOD a Ceriatone OTS 50w to have similar voicing to a TWO ROCK Custom Reverb Signature Version 3????

Or are there any mods for the Ceriatone that can be done to give it a John Mayer type tone???

I am going to get reverb installed and I already have a Clator! The amp repairer just needs to know what to change etc so if there is a schematic that would be awesome! Does anyone have a two rock schematic?

Thanks for your time guys

Cheers

There is no complete recipe that I know of. Use the search function to find discussion on this topic. Here's some: https://tubeamparchive.com/viewtopic.ph ... +signature

I think if you can get John Mayer to play your amp, you will be more than half-way there ;^)

:) - John has about every Dumble amp known to have ever hit the market. He even owns some obscure stuff like "a box later". Talk about a Dumble obsession!! That boy has it and has the bank roll to boot! With that, he also owns a nice collection of Two Rocks... CRS models and his own signature amp. Usually combines all these live (Dumble ODS, SSS, and his Signature amp) to create his sound.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that modding your amp will likely not get you much closer than practicing his songs over and over. Nail Gravity nearly note for note (a live version)... and all the little nuiances of his playing.. His odd finger picking style, syncopated thumb slaps etc :)

Having said that, I'll also attach this document that I found here but cannot "re-find" to give you a link. Hope this helps in your tone quest!! Believe me, this is coming from someone who was on the same quest as you, bought the gear, and still sounded not nearly like John Mayer :) Enjoy!

And an incomplete, unchecked Visio diagram that I cannot also re-find.... hmph..

Go forth and modify.

hahaha gold!! I know it sounds like everyone else. But thats the reason why I dont want to buy a two rock.....

All im after for is the two rock type tone without paying a stupid absurd amount of money.....

I would love to know actually how much a two rock would cost to build......

Your ceriatone should get you in the neighborhood with out all the mods. Get a c-lator and run reverb in the loop and you are there.

I have a strange feeling it wouldn't cost any more than a Dumble clone!

I agree, just about every voicing will be in the neighborhood of tone you're seeking.

Since JM only uses the clean ch. on his Overdrive Specials, the overdrive in the amp is irrelevant.

The Overdrive Special he had was a 100w, EL34, high plate Skyliner.

So technically if you have a standard OTS 50w it has the same Skyliner clean tonestack and the same Phase inverter (other than the type of output tubes and wattage)

A lot of JM's tone comes from using the clean ch. of the amp, Guitar type, type of pickups, string touch, vibrato, phrasing, and Overdrive pedals (a Klon, Tubescreamer, etc.).

Totally see where you guys are coming from!!! What about if you guys can give me some tips with EQing the amp then.... I feel that my drive channel is not smooth and farty. Any tips on how to get some smooth OD and some awesome cleans? I feel like I switch switches turn knobs and just cant get some great tones this amp is capable of doing.... Also whats come hints and tips using the C-lator?

I dunno about the dumble-lator personally. Some guys use it to throttle their volume. I guess on the TR's, the effects loop volume does have a pretty significant impact on tone... which I believe is connected to the (1/2) a 'lator in the amp.

Having said that, you should be able to get some decent sound from your amp without having to add anything.

What tubes did you choose to install? They'll have a big impact on your overall sound...

Here's the best article I found on approaching the dials on an amp...

Good luck!

I don't know what tubes he ships with. I'd guess Chinese tubes, which aren't bad. If it were my amp, I'd probably outfit it with the following.

Preamp tubes:
V1 - RCA or Ei probably.
V2 - NOS JAN GE 12AX7WA from kcanostubes.com
V3 - Ei NOS 12AX7

Power tubes:
NOS JAN PHILIPS 6L6WGB from kcanostubes.com

But that's my personal taste.... There is alot of information if you search the pages here.

FYI: If you are on a budget, I had a lot of great tones come out of this combo:

V1: Sylvania NOS 12AX7 (Green print, grey long plate)
V2: Sylvania NOS 12AX7 (Green print, grey long plate)
V3: New production Tung-Sol 12AX7 goldpin

6L6: Tung-Sol 6L6GC-STR

I think there is a thread somewhere saying favoured new tubes were JJ 083 in V1, JJ803 in V2, Sovtek 12AX7LPS as the PI, I like =(c)= output tubes.
Yours Sincerely
