Express with 6V6 Vs. Fuchs Blackjack 21

Post by Luke Duke »

Sorry if this is rehashing a thread I missed while doing my searches...but I'd really like to know how an Express with 6V6s compares to a Fuchs Blackjack 21....since I'm guessing that's what the Blackjack is modeled after?

I went to Boutique Guitar Exchange in Atlanta this last weekend and played the Blackjack 21. Although I thought it was a GREAT amp it didn't have the gain I was looking for. It seemed to me that there was just a bit more breakup than when my Z is ran wide open. I went back in today before leaving Atlanta to come back to AR and took in my Banzai Cold Fusion. The amp really sucked it up, but I felt like it was just lacking in gain it had in and of itself.

I took a look and instead of 3 pres it had two. This left me wondering if:

(A) Fuchs had left out the third gain stage and the unused triode

(B) That Fuchs had went from a LTP to Split-Load phase splitter

I'm guessing (A) is the most likely.

Also does anyone know if the Lucky 7 is supposed to be the same preamp config but just single ended?

Thanks for the help in advance!

I'm thinking build, but I'm so apprehensive about building/buying something I've got sooo little idea about playing through. That's why I tried the Fuchs, I figured it would be as close as I could get in the commercial realm.

Germ if you don't mind shoot me an PM and tell me a bit about the express style amp.
