Any Liverpool clips out there?

Post by ODwan »

Hi, Folks!

Having succesfully built an Express clone I'm considering building a Liverpool clone for use with my Strat. It's said that the Liverpools are voiced more for SC equipped guitars. I also like my Express alot with SC's but I'm wondering what a 'pool would sound like compared to an Express.
Has anyone any soundclips? Would be nice to hear them.

Happy building,

Timo

There's four of them here:

Sounds like a sweet amp. I think I'm going to try a low wattage one with a pair of ECL86's I have. From the first clip anyway, it sounds smokin' with humbuckers too.

Thanks, Doug!
Really sounds like an amp I have to build. Has a lot of a Vox in it.
A low power amp is quite interesting! As it happens I also have some ECL86s in my box along with a PT which puts out 230-0-230V@0,1A and a Hammond 125D OT. I think that would make a decent starting point.
How about doing this together (sort of) ?

It sounds like fun. The thing is I have a lot of other stuff going on so I'll have to work this as a background task- kind of "when I can get to it". So my pace will be very slow.

Plus, I would like to do it in a series of prototype steps before I build the final amp. I'm going to start with a quick & dirty cakepan prototype with terminal strips using a 125E OT and a 207vac isolation xformer and separate filament xformer. In fact I already have the terminals, switches, pots, power supply etc mounted in the pan from some previous experimenting. I have all these parts so I could start right away, albeit at a slow pace.

With a bridge I should be able to get around 8-10W out of it. I'd like to take it to rehearsal and evaluate how well it keeps up, evalute PPIMV and cut controls, better iron (heyboer 18w ot), and etc too. Then when I determine the final configuration I'll get some turrets and do the build for real. I just hate hacking up a nice build because I need to add a pot or use a different xformer with a different footprint and so on. I want to make this a pretty build and try to get it in a nice cabinet, so I want to know what I'm doing with it going in.

I'll be happy to share my (most likely slow) progress on here though. We could compare notes.

Regarding the sound of the Liverpool, I didn't think it sound that much like a Vox I thought it sounded smoother than the Express. I really like the Rocket with a Strat more than the Liverpool.

All that said, the Liverpool is an interesting amp, and does sound different from the Express.

Dear Rocket

I know what you mean by the comment and them some. The prototype amp I built despite having the same circuitry as a stock AC-30 (Trainwreck power supply) did have more gain then the average AC-30.

I would have compared the prototype amp I built to the copper panel early sixties AC-30's. I loved it.

I experimented with an AC30-based a idea a few months ago. I tried some of the "Rocket" values and the thing I remember was the bigger treble cap in the tone stack. That made a fairly significant difference in the tone as it pushes more upper mids and gives it more of a "Marshally" quality IMO.

I think one of Ken's "trademarks" is the idea of pushing more upper mids through the system, which the Express kind of emphasizes too. FWIW, if you want more gain out of a Vox, try lifting the 10k to ground in the tone stack. You lose a lot of headroom but there is a large area of tradeoffs to explore there. The top boost tone stack is *very* lossy and there is a lot of room for experimentation there if you want more gain.

If you ever curious, compare a schematic Vox AC-30 Top Boost preamp to the preamp of a Marshall Plexi. At their core, the two preamps are not as different as one might think. If you know how to adjust triode stage gains and R-C networks, there are a number of simple ways to make the Vox have more of a Marshall sound and vice versa. Some time ago I was working on a hybrid of the two. Unfortunately, I could not decide on a suitable output stage that was not obviously Vox-y (cathode-bias, 4xEL84 with no NFB) and not obviously Marshall-y (fixed-bias, 2xEL34 with NFB) but would still work well with both. I might rethink the whole project now that I have heard the Marshall 18-watts with cathode-biased EL84s.
