Mesa Boogie Good Deal?

My honest opinion. This is totally worth having. I like these best of all teh Boogies, these were contemporary to the MkIIb series, and the reason why I purchased MkIIbs without ever hearing one. I imagined way too much.

It's a decent price for a decent amp. If you play jazz or lite rock some blues you will enjoy this amp. Nothing wrong with the MKII series as long as you play it for what it is and not try to make it something else.

It's very similar in tone to the early Sundown Artist amplifiers.

You can find MKIII for $1100 and MKI for $1400.
The upper end models have exotic wood cabinets.

The S.O.B. is ok again not a full on rock machine but still can get gain. I personally like the half open / sealed 2x12 and 4x12 cabs that were released with that series. The cabs sound huge with almost any modern high gain amp.

Also another amp that really interests me is the Marshall JTM 30. I heard it's very versatile & sounds amazing, the only downside was reliability. Apparently they tend to overheat. Which is nothing a mod can't fix. What are your guy's thoughts on this amp?

Some of the marshalls are pretty good but in my opinion still one trick ponys, the series i would stay away from is the JVM, admittidly sound good in the shop and ok in the bedroom but the two i had were crap in a band situation as well as being unreliable, the pre rectifier Mesas are in my opinion the best of the lot but you need to like them for what they are, i would still get a Mark series Mesa myself if money was,nt so tight just for the tonal variation to my DC but i love the whole early Mesa vibe

they are great if u want a classic rock sound and only a classic rock sound. Otherwise they are problematic and useless.

Yea ,I have a dc5,The EQ is a nice feature,always sounds best through a 2x12 or better cab.I used to talk to Tien Lawrence and I was allways impressed by the amount of time he spent on the phone with me.I think Boogies will allways have their place in rock.Very versatile,many different amp models.I used to drool over their catalogs.I did play the amp in this thread and it was pretty cool to play wide open,Good Luck,Mikey

Well here's what I saw people writing about th JTM30s. They got a great clean channel, close to Fender amps (which I love!) & the overdrive channel has the authentic Marshall crunch. & it takes pedals really well, (which is perfect for me). The only downside that I've heard on this amp is the overheating. Which is totally fixable with a mod. All in all, it seems like a pretty versatile amp.

"Marshall crunch" is polite for '70's rock it wont push into hi gain or even 80's territory. If you play Texas blues rock or in a '70's cover band it's a great amp. They take pedals very well but even with a driver on the front end they will not give the modern rock tone. "Toadies" is about as modern as they go. Verb's, chorus, wah, delays are all great as long as they are buffered, impedance is an issue on the input. The over heating can be easily corrected, with a mod and fan moving the air. Not running them full out helps. My advice if you decide to get one. Buy two so if one goes down in the middle of a gig you have a backup.

Hi All,

I wouldn't let go my MKIIA Boogie (note : restored/improved) despite its anvil weight and despite that I have 8 other vintage tube amps...
If you search :
- pure clean tone,
- deep and toneful reverb,
- smooth and sustained overdrive à la Santana,
- the same sound at any level, to cut through the mix,
Then this is the amp to go with - and I think that the MKIIB is of the same batch... Sorry, I do not have sound samples (I should buy a little digital recorder!).
If you want Mr Somebody's-heard-all-around tone, then take any other fancy-modern-multichannel amp...
